With every new set of spy shots, we become increasingly more excited for the launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake (or is that Break?). This tapered wagon version of the shapely CLS is certainly a looker, even in pre-production, camo-clad protype form, and after giving its shockingly quick sedan counterpart high marks for its driving dynamics, we can only assume that the complete Shooting Brake package will be really, really sweet.

Oh yeah, there's an AMG version, too.

Seen here for the first time, the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake takes the same sleek long-roof shape of the CLS550 Shooting Brake prototypes we've seen, but adds all of the bulgy bits fitting of any high-performance Merc. All we can say is, it looks absolutely stunning, and we can't wait to see the finished product.

Power is expected to come from the same twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 found in the CLS63 sedan, sending 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via Mercedes' seven-cog Speedshift transmission. Like the sedan, we expect that Mercedes-Benz will offer an AMG Performance Pack, which boosts power to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft in the sedan. Holy moly.

Wipe the drool from your keyboards and click through our attached high-res image gallery to see the CLS63 Shooting Brake prototype for yourself.

Somehow I doubt a "shooting brake" CLS would be a big seller in North America...

I guess this gives choices to people with money looking for wagons. Between this and the E-Wagon there are choices for the buyer to pick from. I guess this is an option for more interior room with a more feminine look

Nice to see this model, but sadly, it won't sell in USA. After all, most suburbanites think top-heavy SUVs or crossovers are more engaging and sexy transportation.

That's not a shooting break, just a station wagon with a pinched cargo area. How the F*** did we get to the point where we're calling sedans coupes and station wagons shooting breaks? You can't just use words interchangeably that don't share a common definition! It ruins the very concept of language. If the definitions of words don't matter then the words have no meaning. They just become noises and jumbles of text.

50 years ago, the idea of a 4-door coupe wasn't weird at all. But I do agree, let's stop calling crossovers wagons (Subaru), let's stop calling wagons shooting breaks, and let's stop calling low-roofed sedans coupes.

I agree, the term "Shooting Brake" sounds just plain stupid, it just makes no sense. Call it a station wagon or as the Brits call it, an Estate. Also, the car looks like crap, just sayin.

coupé comes from couper which means to cut and stands for cut rood lines... otherwise reading comments like your for the 100th time gets pretty boring

Seriously question the reviewers vision is he considers this a "looker". The last generation of the CLS was far better looking.

This is just awful. Hopefully it's actually an upscale Hearse for German funeral homes.

I can't believe I'm seeing this. In a world with the 5GT and X6, I have to say this is still stupider than them. A real wagon with a useful rear area is better than this. Tapering the roof down and shifting the pivot so far forward just takes away all the utility, leaving nothing left but the styling, which isn't much to write home about. Just make a wagon. Heck, make a crossover. But most of all, call it what it is.

just take a look at the concept which looks almost exactly like the final car and then tell me again this doesn't look good.

I'm sure performance will be excellent, but it looks like an R-class that got sat on by a herd of elephants. I'd still be satisfied by an A7.
