Diesel engines are synonymous with torque, and torque equals acceleration. Considering these facts, it's great to see some tuned-for-performance diesel vehicles hitting the ground in Europe from the likes of BMW, including this 2012 X6 M50d, which is part of the automaker's new M Performance line. Now if we could just get them sent to the States...

So, what are BMW fans in the U.S. missing out on? A 3.0-liter inline-six common-rail diesel engine augmented by a trio of turbochargers. That mill is good for 376 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 545 pound-feet of torque from 2,000 to 3,000 rpm, which is enough grunt for a 5.3-second sprint to 60 and a limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.

Of course, diesel engines are also synonymous with efficiency, and the 2012 X6 M50d scores on that front with EU-cycle ratings of 36.7 mpg Imperial (30.6 mpg U.S.), though such ratings aren't equivalent to U.S. EPA figures. In any case, check out the high-res gallery of live photos from the Geneva Motor Show and then hit the jump for the official press release.

      these names are becoming too cryptic. Look at the badge on the back of the car. It's almost a sentence

      36.7 imperial is not 44mpg US. perhaps the other way around? It appears to be that 1 imperial gallon is roughly 1.2 US gallons. so 36.7mpg imperial is actually 30.6 US mpg

        If 1 = 1.2 then 36.7 x 1.2 = 44.04 Right?

          @Seven Eigh8 Si6
          The gallons are the bottom. It's miles OVER gallons. Since the gallons are on the bottom, you divide by 1.2, not multiply. Just think of it this way. If it goes 36.7 miles on an Imperial gallon, and the US gallon is smaller, is it going to go further or less far on one US gallon? Answer: less far.

        ok my bad!
      • 3 Years Ago
      44mpg US? First of all, you did that very backwards. Since US gallons are smaller, the mpg would be lower in US gallons, not higher. Second, the European cycle is very optimistic compared to the US one. On the US measurement system the X50d would get about 23mpg combined. While a decent figure, given the relative price of Diesel you're not really talking about an economy stunner here.
