General Motors unveiled the company's refreshed GMC Acadia at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show yesterday, and if you were paying attention, you may have noticed something curious about the vehicle. While the new Acadia looks considerably better than its predecessor, a few components of the design looked more than a little familiar. Upon closer observation, it appears that GM has simply repurposed elements of the now defunct Saturn Outlook crossover on the 2013 Acadia. Both vehicles seem to share the same wrap-around rear glass, back hatch, tail light openings and exaggerated, squared-off fender arches.

While the vehicles are differentiated by badging, tail lamps and a rear valance, there's no denying the similarities toward the vehicle's rear. Up front, both share similar fenders, though adjustments have been made for the varying headlight designs.

That's good news if you just can't imagine life without the Saturn Outlook.

GM isn't the only automaker to pull something similar. Parts sharing is a smart way to keep costs as low as possible, and recouping the design and manufacturing costs the automaker poured into the Outlook is a smart way to keep GM's earnings headed in the right direction. For example, Chrysler famously reused Dodge Grand Caravan tail lights in the first-generation Dodge Durango. We just aren't accustomed to seeing this sort of recycling on such a grand scale or after so much time has elapsed.

      Since the Saturn Outlook was the most beautiful of the 4 vehicules it's not a bad news.

      Since the Outlook isn't sold anymore I don't see a problem. Everyone wanted the G8 to become a Chevy.... how is this any worse than that?

      I actually think this is a very clever (and economical) update. The significant fender/ d-pillar changes make it appear substantially refreshed from the rather soft-appearing outgoing model, and the Outlook has been gone for so long (and wasn't a big seller to begin with), that there are not a ton of them floating around for comparison. They managed to make the vehicle look quite new without the major investment that would have been involved with new metal design/tooling. Pretty smart and much more successful than say, the Bravada-to-Ranier conversion, which was much more minimal and very obvious. Intelligent resource management for maximum gain.

      Ok, since GMC is doing it...which I have no problem with, GM, can you please make the G8 a Chevy, its life was too short for a beautiful auto.

      I always thought the Acadia looked like a Saturn anyway. Good way to 'refresh' a model without spending a boadload of cash on R&D, especially since most people think that 'Outlook' is a Microsoft product.

      The Outlook wasn't too bad looking so why not? The biggest travesty here is that this vehicle is 6 years old and we've heard nothing about an update to the Lambdas. GM has dodged a few bullets as the Pilot, Explorer and Acadia are not particularly inspiring. But, just because the Lambdas are still competitive doesn't mean GM should rest on it's laurels. There's plenty that can be done to improve this platform including some interior packaging improvements and fuel economy. They shouldn't wait to be passed by the competition before updating these cars.

      Not hard to believe given they're basically the same vehicle. However, the GMC still look great. This would be news if they incorporated the old Saturn parts on the NEXT GENERATION Acadia.

      I think they did it because the squared fenders of the Saturn look better on the GMC, and also that design fits better with the current GMC Linup (Terrain + Sierra). And thats about it. Its not any cheaper than using the current fenders of the Acadia, and since there are no more outlooks for sale I don't see this being a big of a deal!.It is a MCE, they are not supposed to get new sheet-metal. .The liftgate and Doors are the same as the Old Acadia/outlook. and FYI the current GMC was supposed to be a Pontiac.. thats why it looks the way it does. In my opinion the Outlook looked more like a GMC. I do like the 2013 Acadia a lot better tho. The front is very masculine and polarizing. The LED signature in the headlamp should look good when the car is driving behind you.

      Yes, clearly they've re-used the Outlook's rear quarter panels, quarter glass, and tailgate. This seems like a reasonable way to give the Acadia an update, while maintaining a budget. We (car guys) are the only ones who would notice the Outlook roots. Now I wonder what will be done for the Traverse and Enclave mid-cycle freshenings.

      I liked the Saturn Outlook plus now that Saturn is gone they are not a bad value in the used market if you are looking for a vehicle this size.
