Audi has confirmed at the Detroit Auto Show that its 2013 A8 will be available with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the United States. Delivering 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque through all four wheels, the A8 3.0T will be sold in both both short- and long-wheelbase formats and it will be one of a growing crop of vehicles sold in North America with start/stop technology. The move follows confirmation that Audi will also market its flagship luxury sedan with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder TDI diesel engine.

Both powertrain combinations have already been offered in the A8 in other markets, and both engines have already been featured in other Audi models sold here, but these powerplants will be the first six-cylinder A8s sold in North America. Audi has not released official fuel economy estimates for these new powertrains.

Audi A8 3.0T to be Launched in the U.S. Market

Detroit, Mich, Jan 9, 2012 - Audi of America today introduced the 2013 Audi A8 3.0T at the Detroit North American International Auto Show. Featuring a supercharged V6 engine, the A8 3.0T delivers 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, but with great efficiency.

The A8 3.0T will include standard quattro all-wheel drive. Standard and optional equipment availability will be similar to the Audi A8 4.2, including normal and long wheelbase offerings. Later this model year, Audi of America plans to also introduce the 3.0 liter V6 TDI clean diesel in the A8 model line to provide two six cylinder models with exceptional fuel efficiency in the upper-luxury sedan segment. Start/Stop technology will be standard on both models and the first application of this fuel saving technology in the U.S. market for the Audi brand.

The flagship of the Audi brand, the A8 impresses with a lightweight aluminum body featuring the Audi Space Frame (ASF), for improved performance, efficiency and ride comfort. Roughly 40 percent lighter than a comparable steel body, the A8 ASF also features high rigidity and excellent vibration suppression to qualify as an exemplary demonstration of Audi ultra lightweight construction. The LED daytime running lights and optional full-LED headlamps serve as an unmistakable design cue while also reducing weight and requiring less energy.

Audi connect™ also provides an industry-first factory vehicle integration of Wi-Fi® service. This mobile hot spot capability for passengers allows connections for up to eight Wi-Fi capable devices and permits passengers to connect to the internet, link to email and download music, video or even conduct a video conference.

The Google™ Voice Local Search is also a first in Audi connect and it enables more intuitive requests for destinations of interest, while also helping drivers to keep their focus on the road. With the 2012 Audi A8 models, destination searches can be accomplished by voice command, using the innovative Audi MMI touch featuring a touchpad interface or by using the MMI system dial. Other features include, real-time information, such as weather, fuel price updates, and streaming news feeds (available to view when the car is at a stop). Passengers also can enjoy the BOSE® Surround Sound System, or the optional Bang & Olufsen® Advanced Sound System.

Audi pre sense or available pre sense plus helps detect imminent collisions and initiates protective measures by tightening safety belts, closing windows and the sunroof and applying additional braking power if needed. Pre-sense plus uses cameras and radar technology to monitor the area surrounding the A8 for any potentially critical situations and helps warn the driver by way of a display in the instrument panel.

As an American living in Europe, I drive the 3 liter diesel in an A5 Sportback every day...it is extremely fast (5.9 to 60mph) and I think that US-based drivers should willingly accept this engine. Also, the automatic transmissions seem very well suited to these engines. My only dislike is the stop/start technology, but it can be switched off. There's something great about having massive amounts of torque underfoot while watching the fuel gauge remain relatively steady. Cheers to Audi for doing this...would love to see it in the A7 and A6 in the USA!

This makes sense. The average person just wants a "top of the line" model. They don't care about the engine size, just so they can say they have an A8. This is why the C300 outsells the C350, E350 the E550, the bottom line is price.

MkM3 - we are missing an important variable when reviewing engine options - power - weight ratio... The current 4.2 V8 produces 372HP, which can accelerate almost as quick as the 440HP 760... With Audi's extensive and clever use of aluminium, the A8 weighs an astonishing 350lbs less than the 7 series and almost 550 lbs less than the S550! Even the S Hybrid burns more gas than the N.A. 4.2 V8 in the A8! That's what I call clever engineering... With the new 3.0T acting as the successor to just about every 4.2 V8 applicaton, it only makes sense to remove it as an option. Perhaps we will see a year of overlap with both engines available, but realize the 4.2 is just about run its course within the group... the RS5 will be the last application of the 4.2...

Interesting Move. I would love to see them with a slightly larger V6T in this class. Maybe a 3.5 or so. Definitely great mileage but the same engine as the A6 and S4 leaves something to be desired.

Displacement is not the answer here. The V6T produces much better low end power when compared to the V8 4.2 and will only improve on efficiency AND accelleration... The power to weight ratio is unmatched in this segment, with the A8 being all aluminum the competitors are VERY heavy in comparison. Did you know the S-class Hybrid is not more efficient that the 4.2 A8? Amazing!

This is great news. Can we also get the A7 with the 3.0TDI?

I hate to admit it, but this trend towards bringing smaller engine options to the US is a good one. 333HP is plenty for a car like this, given the quality/speed limits of the roads in the US.

Other sites are reporting that this engine will replace the 4.2L V8, leaving the supercharged V6 and the 520hp turbocharged V8-powered S8 as the only gasonline models in the US. This seems an unlikely move, as it would leave Audi with no direct competitor to the BWM 750, Mercedes S550, and Lexus LS460. The A8 V6 is more of an answer to the BMW 740 (which has a ~320hp I6). I would have thought it much more likely that the A8 would get a 400hp-420hp version of the 4.0L turbo V8, similar to the one going in to the S6 and S7. Anyone know the fully story?

they aren't replacing the 4.2 V8 for 2013. but the 3.0t will be quicker then the V8 so it will still compete with bigger engine MB and BMW but it will still get better MPG

          @Truth
If the V6 will truly be quiker than the 4.2L V8, why keep the old V8 around at all? That seems even more dubious, and an even better reason to bring the lower output 4.0L turbo V8 from the S6/S7. As for the V6 competing with the V8 models from BMW and Mercedes, well I am skeptical. I'm sure the A6 V6 will be a peppy car and fine for most. But Merc's V8 is already well over 400hp, and the 750 is getting a facelift next year and is very likely to receive the updated 4.4L V8 from the 6 series Gran Coupe with 450hp. These are not the most efficient vehicles, but someone shopping in this segment may very well choose power over efficiency since certainly they will have the means to. It seems like an absolute no-brainer for Audi to offer the 420hp 4.0TFSI from the S6/S7 to compete with the other german turbocharged V8s.

I have been waiting for an A8 with a TDI for years! I thought it was coming back when they started pushing the A3 TDI. I'm excited to see this finally come to the US.
