Audi CEO Rupert Stadler slipped up while talking to Bloomberg, telling the financial pub that in addition to the 2013 A4 and A4 AllRoad, a small crossover concept will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

Stadler didn't give up anything in the way of details, but the concept will be dubbed the "Vail" and could be a way to gauge reception of a smaller Audi CUV in the States.

If we had to guess, the Vail will feature an Allroad-like treatment on the Euro-only Q3, likely involving a higher ride height, plastic body treatments and a more go-anywhere attitude. We'll know for sure in a few days, but we hope that's not all Audi has planned.

The intended purpose of a CUV is to be a car that looks and has the room of an SUV without actually being an SUV and having all the extra SUV capability for off-pavement. So, a CUV serves its intended purpose. Grocery-store mom in a Suburban is the problem.

Stationwagons look better, handle better, weigh less, get better fuel economy and accelerate better without about the same cargo volume. This CUV reminds me of the Darth Vader helmet looking Acura RD-X. It's not very attractive, especially for an Audi.

Nobody buys stationwagons in the USA, and not for lack of companies trying to sell them. Gone are Audi A4 and A6 Avant, Volvo V60 and V70, BMW 5-series wagon, etc etc. You are correct about the technical superiority of the wagon, but people of wagon-buying age grew up in an era where wagons were either wood-panelled land yachts or crappy econoboxes with enlarged rear ends, and always driven by moms with big hair. The legacy of Oldsmobile Cutlasses, Buick Centuries, and Escort wagons is a lot for my generation to overcome.

How exciting! Exactly what we need! More CUVs! Wait wait, i got that mixed up, that's boring as sin and we don't need any more tall station wagons.

Why the higher ride height? It looks fine where it's at.

Looks good except for the huge slab of black plastic surrounding the tiny foglights..

Put a 300 hp supercharged 3.0 liter in it and give the Vail police 30 of them for patrol duty/advertising Audi. Worked for Saab....

"an Allroad-like treatment on the Euro-only Q3" this doesn't make any sense AB
