At the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford officially put all other muscle cars – and even some supercars – on notice. The 2013 Shelby GT500 made its public debut, and while it doesn't look much different than the models that came before it, the huge change for 2013 lies under the hood: an all-new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 capable of sending 650 horsepower to the coupe's rear wheels.

Since the modern GT500's debut in 2007, Ford has always offered a convertible variant, and that isn't expected to change with this new 2013 model, especially since the rival Camaro ZL1 will be offered in both hardtop and droptop forms. According to TopSpeed.com, the GT500 Convertible will debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in just a few weeks, packing the same 650-hp powertrain and – at least, we hope – some added chassis tweaks for structural rigidity. We can't even imagine trying to handle 650 supercharged horses through a willy-nilly rear end.

The only thing that isn't expected to carry over from the coupe is the GT500's 200-plus-mile-per-hour top speed. It may be possible to achieve this with the soft top in place, but we think the 200 Club will exclusively be reserved for the coupe and its sleeker shape.

Assuming the GT500 Convertible shows its face in Detroit, we'll have the full details in just two weeks.

      I'll never understand why someone would want a gt500 vert, even here in south florida you barely ever see convertibles with the top down

        I agree. The very first car I ever owned was an 89' Mustang LX convertible, and I think I only used it 3 or 4 times in the 3 years I drove the car. It became even more pointless when I moved to a place that has these things called winters. With the current generation, I think the droptop is even more pointless simply because the coupes look so much better. The sloping roofline is one of my favorite aspects of the current model.

      hmmm... so no all-new mustang till probably 2014 as a 2015 Mustang? I think perhaps their too busy working on a next-gen model that is more driver oriented, with a better 50/50 weight ratio and better handling. I would be happy if it turned out like any of the following interpretations http://forums.themustangsource.com/attachments/f806/96611d1322082177-2014-2015-photoshop-thread-2015_a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v410/User7nik/15mustang2.jpg http://forums.themustangsource.com/attachments/f806/86717d1303423913-2014-2015-photoshop-thread-530_view.jpg

        The first photo is gorgeous. I would literally kill for that car. Seriously. No remorse. But unfortunately I dont think the world is ready for such a modern looking Mustang. All of those pictures are huge changes, even moreso from between the other generations.

      Damn. The GT500 just keeps getting sexier and sexier with every new model. Unfortunately, the price also keeps getting higher :(

      Is it going to have rollover protection? Probably not. Is rollover protection important? If you value your life, Yes! Do the German convertibles have rollover protection? Every single one of them.

        Why would Ford redesign the suspension when a complete redesign is right around the corner?

      Ok the GT500 is cool but wow thank you Camaro! If not for you this monster and its future descendant's would never be so stupidly powerful.

      I haven't seen this news anywhere else...Aren't these the same guys that said the new Viper was going to debut at a kids event a few months ago? Seems suspicious.

        Eddie, reread jtav's comment again. Now read this comment... I'm pretty sure a car that we've already seen in hard top guise won't be stealing the spotlight of 2 totally brand new cars when 1 is one of the most anticipated in the American automotive community.

        @EddieW
        How is that a valid comparison? It's one thing about being suspicious about seeing a vehicle no one has seen yet(new Viper). It's not far fetched to say we're going to see the convertible version of a car we've already seen the hart top version of.
