Two bits of automotive movie history at a Profiles in History auction held earlier this month have drawn massive bids from collectors. As you may recall, Steve McQueen's racing suit costume from Le Mans was poised to go under the gavel with the auction house estimating the Gulf Oil suit would fetch between $200,000 and $300,000. Hemmings says that by the time the last bid came in, the suit had fetched a staggering $984,000, thereby proving that when it comes to celebrity auctions, few names can draw dollar bills quite like McQueen. The actor's Porsche 911, which he drove in the film, recently sold for $1.25 million.

McQueen's Le Mans suit wasn't the only big draw, however. The same auction also saw a DeLorean DMC-12 used in the filming of Back to the Future III pull sizable bids of its own. The flux-capacitor-equipped gullwing met the auction house's estimates with a towering final bid of $541,200. Great Scot, indeed.

At a time where anyone can be a "star" by putting up a youtube video, it's nice to know some people know a true star when they see one. That said, as big a fan as I was of Mcqueen, no way I pay that kind of money for his racing suit. His ferrari 250 Lusso however is another story!

McQueen was the best period...it was once said "He is a racer who acts"!!! It was also said that he was such a good actor, that he at times did not need to say the lines - he could project them with a expression!!! Those of you that have no idea about him, just do this - rent these two movies and if you don't believe I will be amased - Bullet and The Thomas Crown Affair....then when you agree go rent The Great Excape...there was reason he was called "The King Of Cool"!!

Then rent Hell is for Heroes, The Magnificent Seven, The Sand Pebbles, and rarely seen comedy: Soldier In The Rain. 100% agree McQueen was the king of cool and my favorite of all time !

You are missing the point. that suit was worn by STEVE MCQUEEN himself. Some copy wouldn't be the same.

So you're telling me that you wouldn't purchase something that belonged to Hiromu Naruse if you had the money? And yes, he is a god in the car enthusiast world.

So you're telling me that if you had the same money along with making the ultimate man cave in your mansion, you wouldn't spend just as much? Steve McQueen is the ultimate if you're a car enthusiast, which I'm guessing you aren't.
