Corroborating long-held suspicions and spy shots, General Motors has confirmed that its surging Buick marque will shortly receive a second crossover. Dubbed "Encore" (apparently GM is hoping consumers have short memories), the five-seat CUV will be revealed at next month's 2012 Detroit Auto Show and carry a 2013 model year designation.

This is the first photo of a promised strip tease(r) series, clearly showing a characterful headlight and a vertical element grille similar to that of the Encore's big brother, the popular Enclave three-row. We like what we see here, particularly the horizontal slat vent snugged into the headlamp assembly, even if the whole thing looks markedly less aggressive than Buick's Envision crossover concept from April's Shanghai Motor Show.

GM isn't saying much about the vehicle at this point, other than to note that the Encore will bring "contemporary styling, signature QuietTuning technology, and a host of features and amenities customers expect from Buicks today." Fair enough.

Buick promises that a new tab will go live on its Facebook page this week showing a covered photo of the Encore so that you can make out its silhouette, and each week between now and its January 10 reveal, the automaker will digitally reveal a bit more of its new baby.

Encore Crossover to Join Growing Buick Brand
Fans can follow photo reveal each week on facebook.com/buick

DETROIT – Buick today confirmed the introduction of the 2013 Encore, an all-new, versatile five-passenger crossover set to debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Encore joins a rapidly expanding family of Buick vehicles that has recently seen the additions of the Verano compact luxury sedan, the Regal GS sport sedan, and fuel-efficient eAssist "light electrification" technology on both LaCrosse and Regal.

Encore will offer contemporary styling, signature QuietTuning technology, and a host of features and amenities customers expect from Buicks today. More details will be made available when Encore is revealed on Jan. 10.

This week, a new Encore tab on www.facebook.com/buick will feature a covered photograph of the vehicle. Each week leading up to the reveal, Buick will uncover a section of the photo. The final image will be revealed the same morning Encore takes the stage at the Cobo Center in Detroit.

Are we seriously considering this is the 2nd generation Saturn VUE... the same model that GM has already said would be sold here as a Chevy to fleet buyers? It's likely this is a next generation Opel Antara that will be rebadged as a Buick when it comes to the U.S., which explains why the side mirrors might be carried over. It's not uncommon for a manufacturer to do that at times- GM, Toyota and Honda have often used things like door handles across many different models and different generations of vehicles.

Actually, upon closer inspection, the mirrors appear to be identical... Hopefully they did a good job hiding its roots.. http://image.motortrend.com/f/2009_saturn_vue/2309904689399674392+ppromo_mt_large/front_view.jpg

I do see some Saturn VUE design in it, but overall I like what I see. I wish Buick the best. When the time comes for me to purchase a new vehicle I'll definitely look at a Buick product.

I wonder too. If they want some sort of signature design element, it seems they need to keep looking. This is not it.

Except it has been their signature design element for 40 years.

The relationship to the Enclave name is a good thing. The re-use of the AMC/Renault car is kind of bad. Hopefully this turns out okay. I can't wait to see this. The Enclave was good (interior is a bit dated now) and the new Buick Verano looks good too, so this could be a good vehicle.

This has been spied before in Germany. Note the mirrors. Definitely another Opel/Buick twin. http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2011/02/spy-photos-chevrolet-sonic-based-small-suv-caught-testing-in-germany.html

Wasn't there already a Renault Encore? In the eighties? Sold by AMC? Which was bought by Chrysler? Who would now own the name?

Just spotted the Buick logo in the headlight. Cool.

Seeing as Opel and Buick are getting closer and closer, I wouldn't be surprised if this also becomes the next gen. Opel Antara. Which would explain why there is some similarities to the Saturn Vue. That and the Vue was on the Theta platform and this is on Gamma. Either way I'm hopeful.

Saturn Vue. They just moved that kink in the headlight over a bit.
