According to French blog Caradisiac, Volkswagen will show a brand new electric-car concept at the Detroit Auto Show. Pitched as VW demonstrating its intention to field a competitor for the hot-selling Nissan Leaf and the most-excellent Mitsubishi i-MiEV, word is the VW offering isn't based on any current car, nor is it destined for production, but the design is inspired by the new Beetle "in order to evoke hallmarks of the brand." We've heard similar things from inside VW directly, but no one is being specific. It's almost like they're trying to keep it a surprise or something.

Whatever it ends up being, the electrified people's car will be sharing floor space with the coming Jetta Hybrid. That sedan will utilize a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a lithium-ion-powered electric motor, shooting for an EPA fuel economy rating of 44 city, 44 highway and 44 combined miles per gallon.

So soon VW will have a vehicle that can compete against the 2004 prius, and in 4 years VW will have a vehicle that can compete against the 2011 nissan leaf.

you can always count on VW to provide a fresh green lie or two. production car is another matter

44/44/44 is better than the Jetta diesel's 30/42/34 and matches the Honda Civic Hybrid while having a bigger trunk, but it's hardly groundbreaking.

This really SUCKS. since years if you read VW and electric car, it is another concept. It will be there in some years. 5 years later there are leaves, and imievs on the market, and from VW, oh look we got a new concept to promote our "clean" diesel. Same with Mercedes, but I always get inside information, that they are ready. They have an electric version of EVERY car. I doubt that they are really ready to make refined mass produced cars. there is the new S class as S500 plug in but mercedes refuses to make more than 10 cars. I have seen one they work. Just imagine Ms Merkel in a Plug-in luxury vehicle, but this will never happen

"the design is inspired by the new Beetle" Perhaps they could just borrow Mitsubishi's two year old concept car?

VW could never come up with something so new and innovative. They will try to recapture the old stale designs of days long past.

Everybody knows they just won't give up on that dirty diesel.
