We heard the rumors in Tokyo, but wouldn't believe it until we saw it. And here it is. Toyota will be replacing its Axio racer with a Prius for next year's SuperGT season.

The touring car Prius will reportedly run in the GT300 class against the recently released Subaru BRZ and Honda CR-Z, the latter of which – like the Prius – will use some kind of hybrid drivetrain in the championship. We don't have any hard details on the powertrain just yet, but expect more to be revealed sometime in January.

I have no intentions of buying a "green" automobile anytime soon, but I love it. Now if Nissan can come up with something to enter to make up for that sad showing they called the Leaf Nismo RC... :)

The GT300 sure is going to be interesting next season: Honda CR-Z (mid-ship V6), Subaru BRZ, and now this Prius (what's left of it, anyway). March 2012 can't come any sooner!

if we could only get a honda Odyssey and a nissan juke, it';d be the wackiest racing series ever. And it would be glorious.

Now if Toyota would make a production hybrid that looked like this...

With the overhead intake, it certainly looks mid-engined. This "prius" will have little in common with the Prius we see on the road, but if this means Toyota is pushing the limits of the power and efficiency of electric-hybrid drivetrains, I'm all for it. It's like the Porsche fly-wheel-hybrid in their GT3 class car. Push the limits on the track, and then take what works, and make MY car better.

Maybe things would have gotten a little awkward if the GT-86 and the BR-Z were to race each other? I can imagine Toyota knocking on Subaru's to see if they can borrow a cup of STi would have been a little strange, even though it was a little weird seeing "Denso" on the BR-Z.

Agreed. I love how folks just make up crap to be mad about, then spout off about it on the internet.

Wow. I hope this encourages Prius owners to stop blocking the fast lane.

Looks like it has about the same amount of "Prius" in it as Ford's custom AWD Fiesta. Boy do I miss the days where homologation was meant to allow consumers in on the fun their dollars end up funding. But now they can homologate a car that never will be seen at a dealership. *Cough* AWD Fiesta. And you wonder why interest in motorsports is declining. It's because enthusiasts are now being told we don't matter anymore. My enthusiast comment will be down modded by a bunch of people driving minivans who somehow landed on this site. That's sadly the majority these days. I'll end with one of my favorite quotes. Sometimes the majority just mean all the morons are on the same side.

Name one AWD car in GT300 or GT500, then you can start discussing the advantages of AWD. Until then, just like all of your other posts, everything you post is irrelevant.

See, this is the reason I hate you, Acid... Not because you boast about your Evo, and definitely not because of your constant attacks on Ford. But because of the way you think you're better than everybody. That last quote just proves it.

If Toyota made a hybrid production version of this, I doubt people would have ever referred to Priuii (?) as beige. This thing looks like an assault rifle in a cupcakes and teapots world, and I LOVE it. I even like the beige paint on it!

Chances of Toyota making this a production car: 0%

The only thing that says to me that this won't be going into production is that this thing has absolutely no relation to the actual Prius except for looks. It's a tubed chassis and will most likely be running Toyota's 2GR-FSE.
