Imagining Top Gear without Jessica would be like watching Ernie without Bert, Conan without Andy or Abbott without Costello. The Allman Brothers Band song has become so synonymous with the BBC car program that most probably don't even realize who wrote it in the first place. But there was evidently a time when the show's producers considered replacing its iconic theme song.

The potential replacement was considered when the show moved to its new studio and spruced up the order of things. As you can see (and hear) from the video after the jump, the electronic intro track just didn't have the same feel to it, but fortunately, Jeremy Clarkson vetoed the idea. Scary, we know, but apparently true.

Thanks Jezza for nixing this BS. It's moves like that, trying to re-invent the wheel, that start the ball of decay and eventual ruin of a good thing. Not only does it fix a problem that didn't need fixing, but it undermines the audience and their ability to notice that it was a problem that didn't need fixing. It's similar to when the producers of the "Family Matters" sitcom, pulled an okie-doke and replaced "Harriet" (The mother of the Winslow Family), one of the main, staple characters from the beginning. The thought that fans of the show would be okay with such a drastic change was an insult. No wonder that was also the show's last season. Don't let that be the fate of Top Gear. Keep the things that make the show great, and only make minor changes to keep it updated with the times. i.e. update the cars shown in the opening theme.

It sounds more like a song from Forza than a theme song for a show.

But they kept the blowing hair! (and the blowhard attached to it)! Jezza's too disagreable, for me, these past few seasons. V8 blender- ok set up lies about electric cars- not good or helpful. I much prefer car show. Adam is kind of a dick guy who is being nice on tv. Jeremy is a nice guy trying to be a dick on tv. Plus adam talks about cars! Top Gear is a ruined franchise at this point, to me. US, UK and all.
