It's finally happened. The good people at McLaren have taken their latest wonder child, the MP4-12C, out for a bit of abuse around the Nürburgring to see how the supercar would perform on one of the world's greatest road courses. With Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch, Editor In Chief of Sport Auto, behind the wheel, the Mclaren MP4-12C was able to clip around the 'Ring in seven minutes and 28 seconds. That puts the carbon-fiber creation just ahead of vehicles like the Porsche 911 GT3 and Pagani Zonda F and four seconds behind metal like the Gumpert Apollo Sport.

Unfortunately, the video after the jump isn't an uncut clip of the MP4-12C doing the deed. Instead, we're treated to a quick synopsis of the vehicle's development as well as a brief dissertation on what makes the Nürburgring so special to manufacturers and fans alike. Hopefully, the full-length footage will show up soon. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.

It's most likely much faster than that. Not taking anything away from the driver, but he's not the official hot shoe over at McLaren. Either way, I'm a fan.

This story is full of problems that have been mentioned already. I wish we would just come up with some freaking rules for tires already. I'm almost of the opinion everyone just use slicks or R compound tires and get it over with, so we don't have to wonder.

Finally a real proof that cars made outside Nurburgring still as good as those made in there, and as fast too.

It says right at the end Pzero Corsas. Those are competition tires just like a PSC. OMGWTFBBQ THEY CHEATED.

If a pig like Camaro can do it in 7:41, I thought McLaren should have done it in at least below 7:20. That makes it only 3% faster. Very uncool.

How about if you do a 50 lap race? Maybe you would understand then. Clearly not a car guy.

Cool. A car not developed at the 'Ring, is as good as those that are. Yay, Top Gear test track. ;)

And this is from a car who I've heard rides as smooth as a Rolls. Awesome.

so the Apollo Sport did it in 7:11:57 , how is 7:28 just 4 seconds slower ? http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/18/gumpert-apollo-sport-sets-new-production-car-lap-record-at-nur/

Sport auto got 7:24 when they supertested the Apollo Sport, the 7:11.57 was a manufacturer lap with sport auto as witness.... and the driver said there was potential for a faster time but they had limited laps.

Fastest vehicle on non-slick tires around the ring? If true (and official) very impressive. Are we sure there wasn't a 'software bug; with the timing system?

Nope, the Lexus LFA Nurburgring did the 7:14 with Bridgestone RE070s ... Viper ACR did the 7:12 with slicks though ...

The McLaren MP4-12C comes with Pirelli Corsas as an option...you really think they didn't have those on the car when making the lap? And the LFA REO70s are the same special version they put on the GTR Spec V which are most certainly the same class of tire as a PSC, whether they say R on the side or not. They wear at the same rate, have the same aggressive tread pattern, and produced massively better numbers on the Spec V (1.12g) which are right in line with the ACR and ZR1 wearing Pilot Sport Cups.

miketim, you're an idiot. Shut up. It's still a production car. It came from the factory like it is. Just because it isn't produced anymore, doesn't mean it gets taken off the list. If that were the case, then the lap time list would be EXTREMELY short.
