Even the plucky Mazda MX-5 isn't safe from the temptation of a black edition. Mazda has just rolled out a Black Tuned Roadster in Japan, complete with a little more style than your run-of-the-mill convertible. The package is largely aesthetic thanks to the addition of a Brilliant Black retractable hard top roof and door mirrors as well as Gun Metallic 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, both the seats and the steering wheel are covered in black leather with sand-colored contrasting stitching. Mazda is only offering the Black Tuned Roadster in three colors; Spirited Green Metallic, Velocity Red Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica. But not... ummm... black.

As befitting a retractable hard top model, the Black Tuned Roadster comes as loaded as they get with standard gear like a Bose sound system and heated front buckets. Mazda isn't saying how many of the models it plans to build, but we do know that base models come with a six-speed manual transmission while a six-speed automatic is also available. Japanese buyers can expect to shell out ¥2,904,762 for the machine (around $37,896 at current conversion rates). Hit the jump for the press release.

Autoblog needs to put in one of those anti-spam processes...irritating as they are. Those programs that offer up a random distorted nonsense string that supposedly only humans can recognize.

How about giving it a much-needed power bump instead of extra colors/editions. A Honda K-series-like 2.0 4cyl with about 200hp & 200-240lb would make this car an unbelievable performer. Especially since a well equipped MX-5 runs you almost $30k.

How about concentrating on the replacement? It's due anytime and I'm sure there's more people out there than me that are patiently waiting anything we can get our hands on, whether it's spy shots or confirmed specs from Mazda...

Yeah, I don't think this "black" edition is even new, I'm sure I've seen this before about a year ago, maybe only in Europe though. Where is the new supposedly 100 kg lighter next-generation model MX-5? I'd like it if Mazda would release some status updates now and then.

They tried, it wouldn't fit. Something about a part of the engine hitting the firewall.

It's the height of the engine too. I had a Speed6, and the top mounted intercooler makes more um..., interesting issues. I can imagine that in a MX-5, the hood is going to hit the intercooler. A V8 can fit in there, but I don't think it fits according to Mazda standards. It needs to be mounted behind the front axle.

But then others can fit a 5.0 V8 in there or even a 350. Pathetic.

Why does AB feel the need to include the current conversion rate when it's completely irrelevant and useless to us? It doesn't give us any idea of the extra cost of the car over a base model or whichever model the car is based on. It just gives over inflated figures to those who have no clue.

From the title, I expected a lifted Miata with 26" spinners.

I guess it was asking to much to make the Black edition actually black.

They added weight without adding power. That's a no-no for a performance model, especially one that's famous for a great power to weight ratio. Should have added a turbo.
