If it's an engine with more than four cylinders, Volvo doesn't want it in its lineup. Within the next 10 years, the Swedish automaker plans to eliminate any engine options greater than four cylinders in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions. No more five- and six-cylinder mills. In their place, Volvo will employ three- and four-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel form.

The new engine family is called Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA), and the automaker says the new powertrains will be nearly 200 pounds lighter than its current engines. In addition, the new mills will improve fuel economy by 35 percent. That will be an impressive boost, and Volvo believes it can accomplish this feat without a reduction in performance.

The 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines will start to make their way into production models by 2013. By 2020, the entire lineup will be filled with them.

      Im saddened by this. Im very fond of the turbo 5 in my S60. It was a wonderful sound n character not found in alot of other engines. Guess ill be holding on to it even longer.

      I find this news interesting. On the one hand Volvo is claiming to be going after the top-tier luxury car makers (from the news story the other day), but on the other hand, they are now going to go 4 cylinder (or less). Now I am not one to think that cylinder-count really equates to anything - there are plenty of 4-bangers making as much, or more, power than V6s - but I still think these two recent news tidbits contradict each other.

        I believe they're trying to find their niche, and they are not at all pursuing the top tier level of luxury. It's a conflict of vision between Volvo's Chinese investors and the actual corporate board. I remember an executive saying that he wanted Volvo to going back to being a bulletproof, reliable, practical car for families. So the downsizing of cylinders would fit that vision. I'm not sure if you could categorize Volvo into anything at this point in time, but it still sounds to me like they are designing very good products. I would be down for an S60 T5 AWD if they built one. Only time will tell what Volvo will become, but I would hope they remain affordable.

      As long as Volvo puts a 6-speed manual in their base S60, I would be completely fine with this decision. If the four cylinder turbo is on par with the current five cylinder offering and generates more MPG, more power to them! Also, adding AWD to the S60 base would be sweet. K thanks!

      I'm hoping that with such small displacement goals, they're going to keep using forced induction? I didn't see any mention of turbos in the press release. I don't care how good their hybrid system or flywheel setup will be. It still wouldn't match the performance feel of an addition of a turbocharger. Well, maybe if it was all electric... but we all know that's not a realistic option anytime soon.

        This isn't the 60's anymore. A 500hp car can easily be safer than a 150hp car (even of the same size and weight). So what if a turbo 4 puts out 300hp, it still doesnt have the balance and engine note of a 5 or 6 cylinder, nor the reliability, and powerband of a higher displacement/lower boost engine. Fuel efficiency is a moot point as well, because we all know that despite the marginal 1-2mpg gains claimed by chopping cylinders for the same power output, in the real world, a higher stress engine consumes more fuel, and boosting a 2.0 to 300hp simply stresses internals more than a milder boost 2.5 or 3.0 getting similar numbers.

      Well bye bye to the Yamaha V8 which didn't do much. The I-6 is sourced from Jag/LR, the I-5 has served them well for decades, so with just I-4 turboboosted, they'll be limited to building smaller vehicles. Even if they were to get a boosted 2.5L I-4, maybe max output would be around 300HP and other luxury cars (the segment THEY said they wanted to expand more in), are already hitting 400HP+. This will be interesting to watch.
