The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a safety recall covering
295,123 vehicles, a pair of Subaru models and a close relative from Saab. The recall concerns front control arms that may fail if corroded, making the vehicle difficult to control. The action covers select 2003-2008 Forester crossovers, 2002-2007 Impreza models and some 2005-2006 Saab 9-2x hatchbacks, the latter heavily based on Subaru mechanicals.

In April, NHTSA launched an investigation after receiving seven complaints from owners of affected vehicles. In two instances, owners reported losing control of their vehicle due to control arm failure. The agency's investigation revealed the front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion if exposed to salt or humid environments.

This is a geographic recall, meaning that Subaru will inspect the degree of corrosion and either replace or rustproof the control arms on vehicles registered for use in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Saab dealers will be responsible to inspect and repair affected 9-2x models as necessary, including the possible rustproofing or replacement of control arms. Owners who think that their vehicle may be covered under the recall are urged to contact their dealer.

      We received this notice on Thanksgiving but didn't take the car in til jan 4. The part is faulty and the dealership has arranged a rental car for THREE weeks! They don't have the part..how can Subaru recall cars and NOT have the replacement part. This is a major inconvenience. Very disappointed in Subaru. Has anyone else experienced this type of delay?

      This is cool, since I was one of the two cases of losing control. Driving down the road and suddenly I'm flying off it at 50 mph. Luckily I (and my daughter who was with me) were next to a field. I submitted a case to the NTSB and hung on to the parts. I was contacted and sent them in, and look! The system does work sometimes.

      I bought a 2004 Forester on January 26 at a dealer in the Cleveland area. The car is on hold waiting for parts as of February 7. The service manager says they ordered 10 sets of control arms and Subaru has not told them when they could expect to receive them.

      Its been 6 weeks since my car has been sitting in mid hudson subaru. They are now saying that they will only cover some of the rental car fee. I have contacted headquarters and am waiting to hear from them. If this is a recall on subarus part why are we at a loss? Time to contact the news. This customer service stinks---sorry subaru but you have lost my business. Where is my car?

      Well with gas prices approaching 4.25 and my XT Forester sitting at the shop for the last seven weeks. I hope they offer to buy my car. In the mean time I will continue to drive the 2011 Rogue they are renting @ 45.00 a day. I was told 4-6 weeks. This is costing Subaru big bucks and frustrating their loyal customer base.

      I have some of the most unbelievable pictures of some extreme corrosion on the entire front and rear suspension on an '03 Forester. The sub-frame nearly rusted in two on both sides. Subaru in Gwinnett county ,Georgia would not cover any of it except the control arms. I do not mind giving out my e-mail and I will send you numerous pictures. usnavyrjclark@gmail.com Subaru could send you the same pictures because they told me that they sent a request to corporate and corporate said, "Give us $1,200 for parts and we'll throw in two free control arms". Do you think anybody in "Corporate" would drive their family around in this death trap? They are laughing all the way to the bank but you can bet your sweet azz IT AIN'T IN A SUBARU.

        @Robert Clark
        I've so far had the same experience, while driving on a nice winter day, no snow, my 03 Forester snapped the front right lower control arm and sent my family and I into a guiderail, at 100km/hr. Luckily we're safe, a gentle crash, but we could be in the obituaries if the case were different. So far Subaru Canada has inspected/admitted the cause was the recalled part, not willing to pay for the rest of the damage to the car yet. We're drafting up a letter to request for damages, loss of vehicle for 3 weeks since crash and extras for inconvenience and mental stress. Any advice?

      I took my saab 9-2x to a subaru dealer for the recall on the control arms as I was told they would fix the problem, they sent me to a Chevrolet dealer who then said I had to take it to a Saab dealer. Also I heard recall notices were sent out last nov., wish I had gotten one because I could have gone to my Saab dealer which is now closed.
