Central Washington could soon become a future automotive hub, if BMW's vision of carbon fiber plug-in vehicles catches on. Standing next to BMW's upcoming i3, chairman of the German automaker, Norbert Reithofer, told a crowd of 150 in Moses Lake, WA that carbon fiber is key to the evolution of plug-ins. Reithofer stated:
Passenger cells are made from carbon fiber to compensate for the greater weight of batteries. Using carbon fiber on this scale has never been attempted before.
As Reithofer spoke, the 600-foot carbon fiber machine operated in the next room, winding multiple strands of the high-tech fiber onto spools to be shipped to Germany. There, the fiber will be transformed into passenger cells.

Robert Koehler, chief executive officer of SGL Group – BMW's carbon fiber teammate – stated that an additional machine is on order and says it should be operational in less than 18 months. Together, the two machines will pump out 3,000 tons of carbon fiber a year. But if BMW's i lineup of vehicles is successful, SGL could add up to ten additional machines. This is just one small part of a bigger change in the industry, as Koehler said that BMW's use of carbon fiber in vehicles slated for mass-production is a significant milestone in the automotive industry.

The Carbon Age Begins - BMW Group / SGL Group Joint Venture opens the new Moses Lake Plant

• Start of carbon fiber production for BMW i3 and BMW i8
• approximately $100 million investment in Moses Lake joint venture plant

Moses Lake, Washington - September 1, 2011... SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers (SGL ACF) – a joint venture of SGL Group and the BMW Group – today officially opened its new state-of-the-art carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, WA. The new facility is strategic for the manufacture of ultra light-weight carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) for use in the new BMW i vehicles.

The two parent companies will invest approximately $100 million in their Moses Lake plant and create 80 new local jobs until 2013. In order to prepare the large scale production start of BMW i vehicles in 2013 it is important to start the carbon fiber manufacturing now. All electricity needed for the production of carbon fibers will come from readily available clean and renewable local hydropower.

Thanks to the emission-free drivetrain and a value added chain designed to be sustainable all along the line, life cycle emission figures for the BMW i3 are at least a third lower than for a highly efficient combustion-engine car. If the BMW i3 is run on electricity from renewable sources, the figures improve by well over 50%.

Carbon fiber technology will fundamentally change the car industry, becoming increasingly important in the quest for lighter-weight materials to reduce fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. With the new SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers plant in Moses Lake, BMW Group and SGL Group are proving that sustainable innovations will provide for a cleaner individual mobility of the future.

BMW i3 first car to have a Carbon Fiber Passenger Cell
The first vehicle to use the carbon fibers manufactured in Moses Lake will be the
BMW i3, an all-electric car designed to meet the mobility needs of drivers in highly populated urban areas throughout the world. Driven purely by electric power to meet the demands of sustainable and emission-free mobility, the BMW i3 embodies an intelligent form of urban transportation and commuting. Previously known as the Megacity Vehicle, the BMW i3 will be the first BMW with the innovative LifeDrive architecture. The Life module part of the design is the passenger compartment made from high-strength, extremely lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The use of this high-tech material across large sections of the car ensures the Life module is remarkably light helping to improve the BMW i3's range and performance.

Sustainable Plant with Room to Grow
In line with BMW and SGL's leading roles in sustainable business operations, the decision to build the carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake was based primarily on the availability of clean, renewable hydropower and competitive energy costs in the state of Washington. The entire supply chain - ecological, social and economic - has been aligned. The manufacture as well as processing of the carbon fibers and carbon fiber composites will be achieved with careful consideration for environmental resources and processes have already been developed to recycle carbon fibers and downstream composite materials.

The Moses Lake plant covers 60 acres of land with the option to purchase additional land for future growth. The plant will initially run two carbon fiber lines, each with an annual capacity of 1,500 metric tons. After a year of design work with ground-breaking in July 2010, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers completed the new Moses Lake Facility in April 2011 after only ten months of construction.

The Moses Lake carbon fibers will be processed into lightweight carbon fiber fabrics at the second joint venture site in Wackersdorf, Germany. The carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts and components will be produced from these fabrics at the BMW plant in Landshut, Germany. The new BMW i3 will be manufactured from these parts at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, Germany.

      The wheels of this car are not adapted to canadian roads with huge pothole, cracks, bosses, etc. It take 70 profile tires and these ones looks like profile 35, maybe in germany it's ok with nice roads but in canada you will smash the wheels and tires in days. Im interrested to buy if they fit 70 aspect ratio tires.

        These are just concept tires. The ones seen on more road-worthy prototypes are 55 AR tires, likely run-on-flat.

      Carbon Fiber first started working with this back in the late 70's, definitely the way to go if a car like BMW can make it pay. Not so sure about the car it not my cup of tea, it looks totally boring and dull something l would never buy in a million years. I would rather cycle it would be better for the environment, if l wanted to be the ultimate greenie. If it was more RWD Mustang then l would defiantly buy it.

For years, DF has been carping on about carbon fibre, now BMW is actually going to build a car from this material, DF announces BMW are all wrong from the colour (which will really alter performance) to the cost! DF says you (not him) can build this car, "much faster for pennies yourself" ! Gosh! You can? I mean can you really? Would you like me to (a) Arrange a meeting with BMW CEO, Dr Norbert Reithofer at BMW HQ (b) Arrange a meeting with DF at trollhaven (c) Arrange a meeting for DF, with Jose 'the shark' Sanchez, Eastside Crips, dark alley,Duroville L.A.?

          You're never happy. I'm gonna start calling you Danny Downer. I doubt it will be slow, and BMW makes tight handling and fun to drive cars at any weight. I had an e36 which was a porker but it outhandled all the 4 cylinder compacts i have ever owned. It also got as good or better fuel economy than all my 4 cylinder compacts ( except the '99 Civic, which was unbearably slow. ) BMW doesn't put out crappy or underpowered cars, at least here in the USA.

      3000 tons may not sound like a lot of material for the auto industry, but it is huge for the carbon fiber industry. Worldwide CF production was somewhere around 40,000 tons in 2010. If BMW/SGL increased production by 5x, as the article suggests, they would increase worldwide production by more than 25%. Those are huge numbers and it's just from one automaker on a relatively small segment of vehicles. It will be interesting to watch how this all goes down.

        'The i3 is built around a new chassis concept called LifeDrive, which divides the vehicle into sections for Life, the passenger compartment, and Drive, the powertrain and battery. For the i3, the bottom half of the car is the Drive section, and is made mostly of lightweight aluminum; the Life passenger compartment sits on top and is built from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Employing these lightweight materials keeps the i3's weight down to just 2750 pounds. The Nissan Leaf, for comparison, tips the scales at 3366 pounds. BMW says that CFRP is as strong as but 50 percent lighter than steel. The entire Life CFRP shell weighs less than 220 pounds. Better yet, it never rusts and reportedly offers better protection than steel in a crash. CFRP only forms the Life sections' shell, however, as replaceable plastic panels form the i3's true bodywork.
