General Motors' German subsidiary Opel has revealed a two-seat electric urban concept aimed at extending the automaker's "pioneering role in alternative propulsion systems."

The diminutive two-seater, referred to by Opel as the "One Euro Car," will make its official debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next week. Opel hasn't revealed much about the One Euro Car, but the German firm does claim its electric urban concept will be a "star attraction" at the Motor Show. It will have competition.

Where does the concept's name come from? Opel says it's because the two-seater can travel 100 kilometers (62 miles) for one euro ($1.41 U.S.), and focusing on running costs is a welcome way to promote plug-in vehicles. The automaker claims its electric concept tips the scales at about a third the weight of modern subcompacts and maxes out at a highway-capable speed of 75 miles per hour. Rüsselsheim/Frankfurt. Opel is staking a strong claim for the title of star-attraction at the 64th Frankfurt International Motor Show with an all-new battery-powered electric vehicle. The concept opens a new chapter in electric mobility and extends Opel's pioneering role in alternative propulsion systems. The key figures of the motorway-capable vehicle are 100 kilometers for one euro, one third of the weight of a modern small car, and a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

Inspired by the success of the Ampera, the revolutionary concept creates a new class of lightweight electric vehicle for zero-emission urban mobility.

The tandem two-seater has production potential and would also be affordable for younger customers. Sixteen year-olds could even begin driving in a version limited to a maximum speed of 45 km/h. Energy requirements ten times lower than those of a modern small car, and energy costs of only one euro per 100 km, benefit the environment as well the budget.

        It's a nice thought, but it won't be built. General rule of thumb is that the more radical the concept car, the less likely it will be made. This looks pretty radical, therefore it won't be made.

      75 MPH with 60 mile range is fun? it sounds like a living nightmare, l would rather by a Dodge Tomahawk it has better range, has a better top speed and will probably cost less to buy thats what you call fun. How much will it cost to buy new?

        The article didn't say the range is 60 miles. It says: "It can travel 100 kilometers (62 miles) for one euro ($1.41 U.S.)" or as the Opel press release puts it: "Energy requirements ten times lower than those of a modern small car, and energy costs of only one euro per 100 km." (which is 62 miles) I'm also not sure that the Dodge Tomahawk has any better range than the One Euro Concept. Citation: "In terms of fuel economy [Dodge Tomahawk], the original Dodge Viper delivered around 5km per litre, since this has the same engine, you can probably guess what it would deliver." As its fuel capacity is 3.25 US gallons (12.3 L), it would be hardly enough for even 60 miles.

      Lightweight car enthusiasts rejoice! (As the One Euro Car concept tips the scales at about a third the weight of modern subcompacts). We will soon be able to reach the untouchable engineering pinnacle from 1908 of the Ford Model T with a curb weight of 1,200 pounds (540 kg). "Huzzah!"

          Modern? The Lotus 7 was produced from 1957 to 1972. It wouldn't even come close to compliance with current safety standards. It also doesn't have the space or ammenities that customers have come to expect, like a radio, A/C and a roof.

        I rode in a restored Model T, you wouldn't want to drive one any further than your driveway. If you got hit by a bicycle you would be in trouble.

      Basically and enclosed motorcycle. Much nicer looking than the Tango. Tango's are hand built and I read they cost over $50k and have sold 1. The problem is that the market would be for motorcyclists who want to move up to an all weather vehicle, but as soon as you are enclosed, then all the standard auto safety requirements should be met. This drives the price higher and once you are in the same price range of a small car, then the small car starts to become more attractive. If Opel can build it to full auto safety standards, and keep the price close to $10k then they will have a winner.

      These tandem seating cars have big gains in Aerodynamics over side-by-side seating. Thus making electric cars cheaper. I still am very skeptical on how many people will even accept these tandem seating for their every day car. The sad thing is it will not make these cars any lighter than say a smart, if not a little heavier making it less efficient at city speeds than a similar city car. If it is intended to be used on highways then it atleast needs to run 160-200 kms. Nevertheless, I will give my vote to this car, if it is any better than the Renault Twizy.

        It's very narrow. a $th wheel will add a lot more stability with only a little bit more weight. Most 3 wheel designs are as such to skirt around safety requirements.

          Sure, yeah, that's the only reason to purposely design a three-wheeler, to avoid safety requirements. The three-wheel design is classified as a motorcycle and has 1/3 less rolling resistance than an equivalent size 4-wheeler under all conditions. As for stability of a three-wheeler, if you haven't driven one you don't know of what you speak. I drive one every day and it is at the very least as stable as that armchair you're driving right now.

          Thankfully so. That single front wheel makes all tricycles handle the same, ready to tip over on the first turn. Tadpole three-wheelers don't have that problem though...

        Better designed because it is 4 wheeled, which leads to greater stability and better handling. I'd suspect that it will do better in crash tests, too.

      The front car-like grill is a little weird, but other than that it looks very aerodynamic and fun to drive. Does it tilt through corners? That would be sweet, though I doubt that GM would ever bring such vehicle stateside.

Recently there have been a number of these style vehicles. Which company will be the first to actually reach production with these lightweight aerodynamic vehicles?

      I like this concept. I can see that aerodynamics wont make a lot of difference until you hit highway speeds but still id rather be seen in this car than a smart.
