Recently, we received word that Porsche was prepping a Ferrari-fighting model that would slot above the 911 and below the upcoming 918 within the Porsche lineup, and now, we have confirmation that this new sports car is, in fact, on its way.

The German automaker was tired of seeing Ferrari face little competition in its class. Matthias Mueller, Porsche CEO, is pushing the automaker to produce a sports car that will cost between 250,000 and 400,000 Euros (about $363,000 to $580,000), and has its sights set squarely on taking sales away from Italy's prancing horse.

For now, that's about all we have in the way of details. Still, we expect good things – we certainly won't turn away at the idea of one more Porsche sports car out on the road.

Let me get this straight.... VW owns Lamborghini. VW owns Bugatti. So there's clearly too much space where none of the above and NONE of the existing Porsches, which is under VW umbrella as well, can fit. At that rate we'll have a VW above Jetta and below Passat...

yeah but Elmo is right, if Lambo asks for permission etc. they have to ask Audi not VW. Audi can do what they want with Lambo except for selling them.

Just because all of those brands are under the same parent company doesn't mean they don't have their own customers, or can't have cars in the same market segment w/ different mission statements. If that were the case, we could do away w/ Acura since we have Honda. Ditto Buicks since we have Chevys. Who needs Chrysler when there's Dodge?? And of course, why in the world does Lexus exist??? This is THE most proitable car maker in the world. Do you really think they didn't think this through all the way???

If it's going to compete against Ferrari, it will certainly have to look the part.

The Euro to USD conversion is always skewed wrong. It'd end up being a 250-300K car. Which is right in line w/ a 458 or MP4-12C. Not to mention you can't touch either of those cars for their actual MSRP.

@ John Blaze , they ARE going for exclusivity. Better sell 300 cars than 1000 cars and make the same total profit. Also Porsche will be in charge of all future VAG sportscars, so we will probably see a $200.000 Audi , a $300.000 Lambo and a $400.000 Porsche built on the same platform. I think they will make their own brand the fastest car of the bunch.

The only reason they can't make a $200,000 supercar is simply that a few of the 911's are already in the high 100 range. It's not a big enough gap. 250 is more reasonable but 300+ is more likely.

Edit: A couple 911's even surpass the 200k mark.

What is the Lamborghini position in VW AG? They are wasting their budget on overlapping investments. That is a Lambo's position. Porsche and Lamborghini are part of VW Group.

Nah, just give us 3 more variants of the 911, each with a unique front bumper and rear wing coupled with different level of tune on the engine. What we really need from Porsche is a full size SUV to compete with the Escalade, the Chayenne is simply too small. We also need a proper shooting brake wagon and a 7 seater minivan. /S

To me Porsche killed it when they released the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 !!! Absolutely a stunning machine. Yes, even better than the Ferrari 458 Italia.
