Our spies recently turned their lenses on this little guy in Berlin, deeming it an Audi concept for the coming Frankfurt Motor Show. Supposedly rolled out from under Audi's e-tron umbrella, its silent running suggests electric propulsion, and its tandem seating suggests an evolution of the Volkwagen L1 concept that bowed at Frankfurt in 2009.

That VW effort was a small-displacement diesel hybrid, and although the design was quite funky, it was more conventional with a fuller body that enclosed the rear wheels. This project from The Four Rings, on the other hand, is more like a sleeked-out version of Gordon Murray's T.25 city car. We have no idea what new thread this will start in the Audi quilt, but we'll bring you all the news from Germany next month.

Is the camo wrap really that necessary when your design is so far out in left field?

I agree. why bother putting camo on a vehicle no one wants to look at anyway

So you speak for everyone? Because from what it seems, you're the only person who doesn't like this car.

Looks like a buggy. Jack the suspension a little higher.

That is actually very cool looking. Much better looking than those other drab looking city cars from smart. If this goes into production, I think this and the McLaren T.25 will revolutionize the city car market.

Why is this called a city car? Does that mean the range and/or the speed is very low? I would love a little car like this, electric or turbo-diesel I don't care, that is hopefully very aerodynamic and with such a small frontal profile would get tremendous highway fuel economy to make for a good compact and inexpensive commuter. Basically, make this a safer climate controlled eco-motorcycle of sorts, and I'd be ecstatic.

I think "city car" is just newspeak for "very small." As for the rest: I heartily agree. One of few concept cars that actually moves the state of the art forward. The safe/enclosed/four-wheeled motorcycle-type vehicle has been a long time coming; here's hoping it won't be killed by regulation. Makes a lot more sense than using 3000-pound vehicles to transport 200-pound humans.

I like it as a concept, but in practice a car's body should be about as wide as its track. Otherwise, you're wasting space.

It's a tandem seater (passenger sits behind the driver), doesn't have to be as wide as the wheel track.

I'd buy that VW. Looks futuristic, gets crazy awesome MPG, totally the way of the future IMHO.

I might buy the VW 1L, if the price wasn't insane. I wouldn't buy this at any price, but then, I won't buy an electric car. Maybe an electric maxiscooter.
