In the battle for plug-in vehicle sales supremacy, the electric-only Nissan Leaf has emerged victorious for the month of July, beating out the Chevrolet Volt for the fourth consecutive month (April, May, June and July).

Nissan
says Leaf sales dropped to 931 units in the U.S. in July, a significant decrease compared to the 1,708 electric hatchbacks the Japanese automaker sold in June.

On the flip side, General Motors announced that U.S. sales of the Volt came in at 125 units in July. The decline, as compared to the 561 plug-in hybrid sedans The General sold in June, is mostly due to extensive retooling at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. The General told our sibling AutoblogGreen that:
We are virtually sold out. Only about 100 2011 Volts [are] left in stock. On average, each Volt spent about 13 days at the dealership. This includes prepping it for delivery.
Year-to-date sales of the Leaf total 4,806 units in the U.S., compared to 2,870 Chevy Volts.

Will the Leaf retain its top spot for the month of August? Or will it be the Volt – with its production reportedly cranked up to triple the pre-shutdown rate – that rises up to take the lead?

Nissan North America Reports Sales Up 2.7% in July

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Aug. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today reported July U.S. sales of 84,601 units versus 82,337 units a year earlier, an increase of 2.7 percent. Nissan Division sales increased 6.4 percent for the month at 77,191 units. Sales of Infiniti vehicles decreased 24.1 percent from the prior year, to 7,410 units.

NISSAN HIGHLIGHTS

Nissan vehicles posted July sales of 77,191 units, an increase of 6.4 percent over the 72,573 units sold in July 2010.

Nissan Rogue set a new July record, at 11,260 units, which is a 2.7 percent increase over the prior year.

Nissan delivered 679 units of the all-new NV commercial vehicles, an increase of 53.6 percent over the prior month.

The Nissan Juke experienced strong July sales of 3,221 units, making for a total of 20,685 units year to date.

Deliveries of the Nissan Frontier increased 21.8 percent over July 2010, to 4,832 units.

INFINITI HIGHLIGHTS

Infiniti sales totaled 7,410 units for the month of July, a decrease of 24.1 percent versus 9,764 a year earlier.

Calendar year-to-date Infiniti sales of 54,678 are down 4.2 percent compared to the 57,064 units sold during the same period last year.

Sales of every Infiniti model increased over last month, supporting an 18 percent increase overall, as full production resumed after the earthquake in Japan, and more than 10,000 new vehicles became available for consumer delivery.

Later this month at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Infiniti will debut the Infiniti JX Concept, which previews a new 7-passenger luxury crossover that will join the line next Spring, as well as the updated 2012 Infiniti FX that goes on sale in October.

NOTE: To ensure consistency in global sales reporting, Nissan North America calculates monthly variances on a straight-percentage basis, unadjusted for the number of selling days. July 2011 had 26 selling days, while July 2010 had 27 selling days.

      From what Ive seen, also living in Silicon Valley, the Leaf to Volt ratio is 3:1. I think it would be even higher if a lot of the apt complexes had electric outlets for on site parking. A lot of people, myself included, have short drives of under 10miles to get to the office. Being able to charge my adult sized go kart at my apt complex is the main obstacle

        Yes. if they want ownership to explode, they need to work with apartment owners to setup charging stations or at least be charging station ready. Also have some type of built in security so your charger box doesnt get stolen...

      if I bought a Leaf, I couldn't even drive it home from my nearest Nissan dealer; it's beyond it's short little range. a two day drive to go 150 miles, assuming I could find a place to charge the thing. now that's progress, isn't it? ...and all that for 35 grand.

      I am really hoping for a Volt victory here. It seems like a better alternative for people with its range extendedness. Also, in my opinion it is simply a better looking vehicle.

      The thing is, more people are buying Leafs because it is one of the first electric cars that anybody can buy, it is like the debut of the practical electric vehicle. And that excites people, the promise of a new uncharted technology. To most people, the Volt is just another hybrid, really, because it is. Hybrids were the next big thing 10 years ago, but now they are commonplace. So despite the fact that the Volt is bigger, more practical, and takes care of issues like range and recharging with its back up generator, people dont think it as a range extended EV but just another hyped up hybrid. Also the Leaf looks 'cuter' than the Volt, which doubles its sales interest.

        Trying to gauge sales interest or speculating on why one vehicle is selling better than other when we are talking about two vehicle that are sold out and selling at such low units is not worthwhile. Nissan and GM can't make enough of these to keep up with demand so why are we even having this conversation. Maybe next year when Nissan and GM are making more than 10,000 units per year we can gauge how the public really feels about these two cars.

        The Volt isn't "just another hybrid". It doesn't operate like any other hybrid on the road. Under the hood, there are architectural similarities to other hybrids, and semantically, it is technically a hybrid. But to the end-user, it behaves very differently. No other hybrid offers the ability to drive gas-free.

      Shortage of inventory or not, I think that someone looking to buy an electric car probably does not want to have to put gas in it....IMO

          No, I am pretty sure the Volt needs gas. It will periodically fire up the ICE to burn through old fuel, and for other reasons as well.

          Also, if I recall correctly, the volt fires up the ICE when it hits a certain sustained speed to help aid the electric motor power the the wheels.

          @ EvilTollMan: Well, you recalled incorrectly then. The Volt does not "fire up the ICE when it hits a certain sustained speed". When under battery power, the Volt can run all the way to its top speed until the charge level reaches a specified level when the ICE will kick on to maintain the charge of the battery. However, the ICE may kick on before the battery runs down if the weather is especially cold or if mountian mode is selected and the ICE is used to add additional charge to the battery. What you are confused about is that when the ICE is running, there are certain situations when the ICE can directly send power to the wheels. However, this is a rare occurance and only occurs once the ICE is already online, the ICE won't kick on just for that reason.

      These articles are so misleading. The article makes out like the Leaf is more popular than the Volt, which is not the case. Sales numbers cannot be used to determine popularity when both cars are totally production constrained. "Nissan Leaf still holding sales edge over Chevy Volt" means nothing more than "Nissan is currently able to produce more Plug-Ins than GM"

        Sadly, production does equal popularity in my mind. It's GM's fault for not producing enough, therefore the Leaf is going to end up more popular simply by market saturation. The Volt was doomed the day they debuted the style versus the original concept. Wait, what's a Volt?

      Sooooo the Leaf won out because the Volt's production was stopped due to retooling. I guess that's a win... right? Until both the Leaf's and Volt's production lines get into their 2nd, uninterrupted, full-production year, the debate between Leaf versus Volt sales is going to be pointless because production for both these cars isn't 100%.
