A word of advice: The next time you're cruising the streets of Vilnius, Lithuania in your luxury ride and are suddenly beset by the urge for a cup of kvass and/or a slice of honey cake, don't just pull over and leave your vehicle illegally parked in a bike lane. Seriously. Mayor Arturas Zuokas and, we imagine, Lithuanian cyclists, aren't amused by such antics.

While some municipalities might be content to leave tickets on the windshields of bike-lane blocking scofflaws, the good mayor recently realized owners with Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, and Rolls-Royce keys in their pocket not be dissuaded by such minor punitive action, so he decided a better parking enforcement tool might just be an armored personnel carrier.

Hit the jump to watch a video involving the aforementioned APC, the mayor and a hapless S-Class.

I'd love to have a vehicle with the same capability, though I'd more likely target double-parkers, Suburbans/Excursions/et al parked in "Compact Only" spaces, or two-space hogs that park diagonally so as not to risk getting a door ding on their precious baby.

Because towing the cars and getting the revenue from the tow does not work in every other country?

Am I the only one thinking this is nothing more than well staged political propaganda? The presence of the camera, the mayor himself sweeping up the mess, a new Ferrari and a Rolls have been seen parked there, but a MB that is several years (and generations) old is the one he crushes with an APC that is conveniently parked nearby?

Who cares if it was staged? It was pretty damn creative and funny PR. Metaphor for an even bigger legal punishment, perhaps? Either way, running over a car with a tank is always classy fun!

that's basically the equivalent of getting your hand chopped off for stealing a loaf a bread, but probably an effective deterrent!

Yes!!!!! Way to go mayor. He even swept up after the mess and shook hands with the owner. If it was faked I couldn't tell.

So what do they do about people who camp out on fast lane going 55mph on the freeway? I know, let's get the bus from 'Speed' and ram them from behind repeatedly to make a point.

This is what Jerry Brown should do in California with the drivers who use the #1 freeway lane for cruising. Citations don't stop them, but crushing them like bugs will.

#1 and #2, #1 is the carpool lane, and #2 is the lane next to it where what you mentioned infamously occurs.
