2012 Fisker Karma – Click above for high-res image gallery

The first 2012 Fisker Karma will finally be delivered by the end of this month and, fittingly, film star Leonardo di Caprio will get the keys Karma numero uno, with Al Gore and Colin Powell taking delivery of their plug-in Fiskers soon thereafter, according to Autocar.

Fisker tells Autocar that five Karmas roll down the lines at Valmet Automotive in Finland a week. The automaker says production will rise to 300 units a week starting in November and, with 3,000 pre-orders tallied, Fisker estimates the Karma is sold out until early 2012.

Here's where Autocar's report gets fresh. The UK-based news outlet says that sedan, convertible and shooting-brake versions of the Karma will eventually be produced and that the shooting-brake model will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Autocar continues by speculating that Fisker's $48,000 plug-in, dubbed "Project Nina," will by offered in the same three bodystyle variations as well. Hat tip to Roy!

          He does none of that. But you couldn't resist the temptation to make up dumb garbage.

      Leo and Al getting one is cool, but I find the fact that Colin Powell is getting one is the most interesting tidbit out of that sentence.

        He's also a military man. I wonder how many reports, projections and strategic blueprints crossed his desk that dealt with 'loss of oil' scenarios. He's just prepping himself for the future.

          Hey RJC, he is a political hack, I use to have respect for him, however his support of political tinkering with the Military was the final straw! He use to talk about Army values...he no longer follows them! Miserable failure!

      I love this car. The interior is a little ostentatious, but for a plug in electric sports sedan with a range extender, I'll take it.. I have been wanting the S (sunset) convertible for years. I'm glad they are finally going to be delivering the first sedans. That means it won't be much longer for the convertibles.

      This is awesome! Glad it is finally rolling down the line. Can't wait to see the other versions and the "Nina" If I had the money, would definitely look into the Shooting Brake.

      It's good to see the Karma-Fisker being delivered. It should kill off all those tiresome naysayers. Leonardo di Caprio was also an early high profile adopter of Prius. Well done to Al Gore and Colin Powell. Now how soon before the RHD version becomes available?

      Once you get past that handlebar mustache grille, this car is gorgeous. I'd love to see some interior shots that aren't quite so staged though.

        Totally agree. Pretty nice car but a little out of my price range. I kind of like how it is truly a "series" hybrid unlike the Volt in CS mode....and also how w/ the RE on and all the juice from it PLUS the batteries gives it some extra performance.

          I suspect the numbers will be similar to the Volt's actual usage numbers. Most people will do most trips on battery power alone, meaning the bulk of the total mileage will be gasoline free.

          I'll be really interested to see when some owners' numbers start being compiled. The generator could be tuned well, in theory, and produce electricity at high conversion efficiency, though it would probably be a hellish racket if it did (moderate RPM & high load).

          • 4 Years Ago
          @GeorgeS
          Why do you want it to be pure series? Do you prefer lower efficiency?

          @GeorgeS
          Jon, No I don't prefer lower efficiency. It's nice to have a pure series unit out there though. We spent years arguing about it on the Volt forum. I always claimed it was less efficient because of the conversion losses and a mechanical link was more efficient. The fact that GM put in the mechanical link supports the "series is less efficient" theory----GM claimed the link picked them up 10% in MPG in CS Mode.

          Although the pure series arrangement probably whacks the MPG.
