2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW is using the design elements of its latest 6 Series to create its first foray into the four-door coupe world with this, the 6 Series Gran Coupe. We'll likely see the finished product at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and judging by these latest spy shots, the big four-door is indeed nearing completion.

Much like the 6 Series coupe, we can expect the Gran Coupe to launch in 650i guise, powered by BMW's 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, with a six-cylinder 640i model following shortly thereafter. In any case, the Gran Coupe will go head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7, and we're eager to see how the big sedan looks with all its camouflage removed.

I thought the X6 was BMW's answer to the CLS. Now they decided on creating this? A bit late but it will sell. I think it has a better chance than the GT.

The front overhang is way too long. It should be no longer than that of the 5's.

Why don't you become CEO of BMW and make it better.

All these BMW haters are really getting on my nerves. Sure, the 5GT and X6 are bad. But their bread and butter cars, the 3, 5 , and 7, are still very nice looking and sporty vehicles. Just because they are going into niches doesn't mean you have to hate on their other cars.

So its bigger than a 3-series, smaller than a 5, but uglier than both?!? BMW what the hell happened to you? You used to make such cool cars. Sure, your cars were bought by d-bag yuppies, but they were still cool cars none the less. Now? Yeah, not so much. Except for the 3, none of the other cars in the BMW lineup really interest me.

Every car that BMW makes is the sportiest in its segment.

          I don't think I'd exactly consider the 5GT, X3, X5 and 7 Series "Sporty"

Well, they're not considered sporty next to other BMW's, but they are they sportiEST cars in their respactive segmants.

Lets go down the list: 5GT vs A7 - I'd say A7 is far sportier. X3 vs Tiguan - I'd consider the VW may be sportier X5 vs Range Rover Sport - I'd definitely say the RR is sportier 7 Series vs Jaguar XJL Supercharged - The win definitely goes to the Jag

this is bigger than a 5-series. It's designed to slot inbetween the 5 and the 7. The intent being that it's a "sportier" vehicle than both.

It's not about weight or size. It's about shape. 5 and 7 are very nice but if you want a slick 6 looking like sedan you would go for this. The call it coupe for exclusivity. Other brands will follow.

Very nice looking car! If they put in the twin turbo V6 from the 1 M as the mase engine, it could be a blast to drive, like most BMW's.

I still don't see the point of this car. The CLS is so obviously lower and swoopier than the E Class, but this just looks like every other BMW sedan. And the price point? 5s already overlap 7s, with the 6 being differentiated only by numbers of doors. I don't see where this is really going to fit in. It must have been very cheap to manufacture making low sales numbers possible.

There is a big gap between the pricing of the 5 ($45000) and the 7($70,000). BMW needs a car to slot in between the 2.

No, they don't. They need to fix the blandness. They did a nice job on the interior remakes, as the 3,5 and 7 all lost ground in the last generation. Much better there. Too bad about the looks.

..as an ex auto designer.. not thrilled with their direction as of late. Bangle's work was more exciting and innovative to my eye. When Audi brought Bauhaus back, and BMW followed with flame surfacing.. it was a good time to be in the market for a German car.. but these cars are bland and bloated (not to mention everything now has a Turbo it seems). Nothing beats the induction noise on individual throttle bodies and hair trigger throttle response.. that is 'M' to me.. that is exciting. A turbo is a glove.. but a high compression normally aspirated engine is a fist.

I agree... you could hate Bangle's designs, but there was no denying they were different and innovative to car design. They sold well so they couldn't have been that bad...
