BMW 1 M Coupe vs Audi RS3 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

There's no end to the vehicles to which you could compare the BMW 1 M Coupe. You could pit it against its big brother the M3, or the original that is its spiritual ancestor. Top Gear put it in unusual context with the Volkswagen GTI. Autocar against the Porsche Cayman R. The list goes on and on, but perhaps its most natural modern rival is the Audi RS3.

Sure the RS3 has all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch gearbox, not to mention two more doors, but their stats are otherwise pretty much spot-on. That's why AutoExpress chose these two for the most basic type of race you could imagine: a straight-line drag down the quarter-mile. Follow the jump to see who won.

So an AWD car launches better than a RWD? Wow! Thank you Captain Obvious! Drag races are kinda dumb anyway.

the RS3 and 1M were already tested much quicker at the 1/4mile... both can do under 13s

That win seemed more like human response time. The driver of the 1M seemed to be daydreaming for a split second. Also i would of rathered hear the cars than the cheesy music.

Seriously the RS 3 got a gigantic jump on the 1M that pretty much resulted in that gap, and that held for the rest of the race.

No actually you're quite wrong. Mine has been rock solid, and almost everyone I know with one reports the same. Just because you can't afford one doesn't mean you have to make up BS.

he's right for the most part, though.. lol.. audis are the most expensive cars to maintain and BMW comes in a close second.. they are garbage for the everyday driver. with that said... although i think the RS3 is one of the best looking cars on the road, i would still take the 1 M, which looks Cobalt with a wide body kit..

Yes, the M1 is an incredible car to drive, hence why it is BMW's most iconic sports car. Now the 1-Series M Coupe? Stop being a fanboy and realize that BMW made a mistake with it.

LOL at the drivers..13.9 in a 1M? Please learn how to drive auto express. and anybody who would take RS3 over the 1M is simply not a car enthusiast.

sure, the 1M is more fun during summer, but i'd take the RS3 for when i go snowboarding. too bad the RS3 doesn't have a manual option.

what about snow tires on the RS3 ? summer tires are illegal during the winter where i live. i prefer AWD for snow, even if it's front biased, that's why i use my old A4 quattro on gravel roads and during the winter. for fun in the summer i bought a 996 carrera 2 :)

It's less about drive train and more about tires. Using high performance tires the RS3 is fitted with is still very dangerous in the snow even with AWD, the M1 with snow or All-weather tires will be safer. Tires are just way underrated.

I'll take an STi over a Z06 for when I go snowboarding too.. does that make it a better car? exactly.

I'm a car enthusiast but I'd take the Audi. The extra two doors and more storage space + bad weather capability = winning, year round. RWD + snow = sucks. Especially for ski trips.

brb buying a $60,000+ rebadged GTi with a Audi A3/A4/A6/A8/R8/S4/S3/S6/RS4/RS6 front and automatic transmission over a RWD manual track car because it has more storage space. strong car enthusiast you are.

@ cole yeah because everyone has unlimited cash flow to get multiple vehicles & goes to the track everyday. You sir are an idiot. Yes the BMW handles better around a track but the audi can carry twice as much stuff while performing better in all around conditions.

If I was out to get a small hatchback to go snowboarding and I didn't have a lot of money, the $60,000 RS3 would be THE last thing on my mind. A lot of people can afford a $45,000 weekend car, not a lot of people are going to spend $60,000+ on a rebadged GTi.

This thread is full of stupid. For the moron who think it's a rebadged GTI -- it ain't. Even if it had the same powertrain (it doesn't; it's an entirely different engine, and it's a beauty), it still wouldn't be rebadged. Rebodied, maybe, but not rebadged. You should look up the difference.

Kind of an ignorant statement don't you think? Learn to speak for yourself and not others. I am a car enthusiast and really like both of these cars a lot...with that said, I would take the RS3 every day of the week.

yea...this is BS. 13.9 in the 1/4 mile??? I get 13.3 easily all day everyday in my 335i stock. What a crock...

why are people downvoting simple comments stating facts here? Get a life...anyway... Yeah I hate how we always see these "races" where they *****-foot the cars down the track in some gigantic amount of time, and somehow expect people to believe that's as fast as they'll go.

Nice win. I admit, with all the M1 hype and press lately, I half expected it to win. Nice to see Audi holding it's own, maybe it can get some press now.
