Fifth Gear rings out the McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari 458 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Fifth Gear's Tiff Needell and Jason Plato (lucky bums!) had a go at both the McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari 458 Italia, testing each car for thrills and for precision. While both may seem to be winners in the pantheon of automotive excellence, one one can come off victorious.

Both drivers render the same verdict, and it's the kind of final assessment you don't often get from motoring shows: one wins on paper, then gets trounced once they discard the spec sheet and grab the wheel.

Powerslides, tire smoke and some unintentional off-roading can be found in the video after the jump. Enjoy!

Video has been deleted. I commented earlier that i was rooting for the McLaren but my post vanished. I didn't mean "root" in the British/Australian sense.

This is a toss up for me. If I had the money tomorrow, the logic in my head says "I'm not tiff, the electronics would probably save my ass" but the animal inside says "OMG FERRARI SOUNDS SO AMAZING, LOOKS SO AMAZING, ALL WOMEN EVERYWHERE WILL LOVE ME".

Having driven the 458 on the track I can safely say the electronics will save your ass in the Ferrari too and let you post up faster lap times than you'd be capable of without them. It is nice to be able to dial in the "hoonage" you want at the flick of a finger. Truly an amazing car, I wonder what the "Sucderia/Challenge/stradale" version will be like!

I saw that as well. I noticed the lines that looked like the Hammerhead but I wasn't sure until I saw the jumbo jet.

"This video contains content from Channel 5, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." Wut? I live in England, damnit, I'm somewhere where 5 broadcasts!

"While both may seem to be winners in the pantheon of automotive excellence, one one can come off victorious." I have the feeling you mean "only one" rather than "one one", Mr. Ramsey. ;P

Jeremy Clarkson probably wet his diaper when he watched this. His mantra of "if it isn't British, it's crap!" has been thoroughly abrogated by Fifth Gear.

what i actually like about 5th gear is that he guys are real racers, not some journalist like hammond or jezza. sure, top gear is more fun to watch but i think what the guys on 5th gear are saying has more weight, cause they know what they are talking about.

I prefer Tiff and the gang over Top Gear as well. They seem more honest and I love their emotional enthusiasm (as opposed to frequent cynicism by TG). Top Gear is entertaining at time but it's becoming more and more apparent that they do it for the ratings and to get a rise out of the audience. Tiff especially wears his emotions on his sleeve but I can totally empathize with it. Another great crew is from Autocar.co.uk. Steve Stucliffe is a quintessential Brit and I love his style!

They also seem to push the cars WAY harder on 5th gear.
