Nissan Leaf Nismo RC at Le Mans – Click above to the watch video after the jump

Sit back, relax and enjoy the blissful whine emanating from this spinning electric motor.

What we have here is a sitcom-length video of the battery-powered Nissan Leaf Nismo RC lapping the famed Circuit de la Sarthe prior to the running of the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. Behind the wheel is none other than Nissan's number two in command, Carlos Tavares.

Recorded on June 11th during the "Le Mans vers le futur" – a demonstration event designed to showcase some potential vehicles of the future – the onboard cam puts you in the middle of the on-track action. It's 22-plus minutes of electrifying driving... literally. So, hit the jump to find out what it's like to drive electrified.

FYI, the pace picks up about three minutes in, though we wish Tavares had taken an all-put lap instead of following the slower BMW ahead. Maybe next time...

Tired of hearing about lame and inevitably futile attempts to make electric cars and hybrids cool. I'd take a 959 over a 928 Spyder any day. The same goes for an Elise over a Tesla, I'd rather have my car weigh hundreds of lbs less, handle and respond better, cost 50% as much, and have 300% of the useable range. Even perfected hybrids and electric cars will conceptually be little more than amped up vacuum cleaners. Tossing in a bunch of hybrid drivetrain components and slapping a 'green' mantra onto a car is a cop out from designing truly moving and transcendent combustion engine cars.

you sound like a pickup driver that would try NOT to enjoy a ride in a Tesla Roadster. electric cars are exciting now, they get raced at drag strips, and road courses. you don't have to get on board but it's official they're here to stay in some form.

You know what the real problem is with an electric sportscar? Driving 100km to the track, doing lap sessions throughout the whole day, and then cruising back home. If I can do that on one charge, THEN perhaps I will consider an electric car. Until then, GTFO. I want my car to be a convenience to me, not a worry.

Doesn't have to be all on one charge, but the "re-fueling" needs to take less than 5 minutes.

Yeah, nothing about this is enticing. Why buy an EV? It looks great and performs well [Fisker, Tesla], or it's really, really green. Not because an obscure version of it made a slow lap around Le Mans. Seriously, I'm still convinced this thing is a joke. Talk about a sheep in wolf's clothing. My favorite 'eco' cars are the Porsche 918 and the GT3 R Hybrid. :)

This is the first vehicle graded at the Ring with a "pass/fail" score, rather than an actual timed run.

You do realize it's using the stock drivetrain components from the LEAF, right? Sure Nissan could build an EV that goes twice as fast - just look at what an enterprising individual has done with White Zombie out of his garage. This car is more of a concept car than anything else.

And with as much hype as this car is getting (which is still beyond me) I think Tesla should have just rolled out a fixed roof race model of their roadster to show Nissan how it's done. Just sayin...

Is this 22 minutes because that's how long a lap takes in this?

Who would have thought the day would come where the Honda CR-Z sounded meaner than a "race car"...
