Factory Five 818 Design Contest Winners – Click above for image gallery

Factory Five hosted a contest to find a new design for its upcoming 818 sports car. The call went out to designers from around the globe, and winners have been crowned. The top dog goes by the name Nouphone Bansasi, and his hard work netted him $5,000.

The 818 sportscar is going to be Factory Five's next project. Designers needed to adhere to a few guidelines as part of the contest. The production vehicle will utilize a Subaru WRX donor car, stick to a 95-inch wheelbase, seat two people, work with a mid-engine/rear-drive configuration and weigh no more than 818 kilograms (1,800 pounds, and hence the name).

Many entered, and the designs are pretty impressive. Bansasi took the the top spot, but many received recognition for their work. You can check out the top creative creations in the gallery below. Also, we've got video of Factory Five discussing the outcome of the contest and the upcoming 818 sportscar posted after the jump.

Oh, and not that anyone asked us, but we're kinda partial to the design by Romain Ferrands, which is included in our gallery.

As a big fan of Factory Five, and of Subaru, I think I need to start saving my pennies! In a way; I feel like this is going to end up sort of being what the Toyubaru/Subyota FRS FT-86 should have been; A subaru engine in a RWD lightweight chassis.

I love the end result and think the concept is a stroke of genius (or at least inspired). Sadly, I'm still on the fence when it comes to crowdsourcing (spec work) or whatever flavor of free labor you'd like to call it. I know it's all the rage to socially engineer, design and vote on a project - but I think it really harms the entire field of design. Preying on enthusiastic 20-somethings willing to work for fame is a gray area IMHO. Mixed feelings overall. :S

That's a shame. Those are nice looking sketches.

A 'Contest' looks like a way to avoid minimum wage laws compared to hiring a working design firm. Even a student should have gotten $5k + plus royalties and a 2X bonus on the 100th kit sold. At least it is a new design; no matter how you pretty you paint copy-cars, they remind me of the Hair Club for Men selling Brad Pitt wigs. Jim

There's some real talent on display here. While I disagree with the official Autoblog choice (that vertical blade is just weird, even if it would cool the engine), I think the 1st place choice is solid, as are the others. Now if they can produce it affordably, we'll be on to something...

agreed. I probably would have chosen Colin's or Xavier's as both could have been used in a wet weather environment but the winner has a good design as well.

Dislike the top pick. Make it a hard top please, so I can drive it in the rain. Kthxbye

I would've went with the 2nd, it looks more visceral.

Agreed, the first prize one they picked looks to soft.

Once the kit hits production, Shelby should start offering replicas at a fraction of the price...

2nd place all the way. 1st place looks like a nasty Alfa/MG abotripton.
