2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 runs 'round the 'Ring – Click above to watch video after the jump

Chevrolet has a few upgrades in store for the mighty 2012 Corvette ZR1. One of which is a set of optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure Tires. Coupled with the the Performance Traction Management (PTM) system, the 2012 ZR1 is going to be one fast grippy guppy.

Chevrolet wanted to find out how the new car handles one of the worlds most exciting roads, so a trip to Germany and a ticket to the Nürburgring were in order. In 2008, a Corvette ZR1 ran around the infamous track in 7:26.4. The 2012 car blew that time away with a 7:19.63 blast around the 'Ring – that's a six-second improvement, for those who don't feel like doing the math. Want to ride shotgun on the 12.9-mile journey? Put on your helmet, click past the jump and check out the clip.

Impressive. At those speeds, on that track, if the key touch points (Steering wheel, shifter, pedals, seat) are good quality and inspire confidence - the rest of the interior really doesn't matter much! Terrific soundtrack and awesome g-force levels (over 1.5 in some spots). Yellow is a good color for a car this insanely quick and vicious. "Chassis development engineer / Nurburgring test driver" Now that is a killer job title...

The ZR1 is just an awesome beast. It is a handful to drive (judging from a Z06, it should be), but that's the thrill of it. It takes SKILL to drive it fast. That's S-K-I-L-L. The car doesn't drive for YOU, YOU have to drive the car.

Are they running in Le Mans this weekend? I know some teams are running vettes, but is the Corvette team racing this year?

HOLY CRAP. Thumbs up for fast forwarding to the back stretch, and noticing that the driver stayed ON THE THROTTLE FOR THAT SWEEP AT 180MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They must swing around when that guy walks. JEEBUS!

That's an insane amount of grip. Either these things are DOT slicks or else tires have really made a giant leap. Impressive lap time.

For no good reason, I am curious as to the average cost of these brief factory excursions to the Ring. --air transport, crew, accommodations, Ring fees ,etc.

Ship transport is only around 1500-1800US and takes about 10-14 days. The ring is a toll road and cost less than 30euros I believe (should find out this summer). The benefit of testing there is worth the price when comparing the car to its European peers.
