Next-gen Mini Cooper spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mini may have just released its own "spy photos" of the new Coupe, set to go on sale later this year, but now, our cameramen have spotted the next-generation volume model Mini out on the street. As you can see, the next Mini Cooper is expected to grow in size a bit, if only to make room for a smaller entry-level car that's coming down the pipeline (previewed by the Rocketman concept from this year's Geneva Motor Show).

While the Mini's overall shape won't be changing, we can expect the front fascia to take influence from the design seen on the Countryman crossover. Moreover, the new platform that underpins the Cooper will be shared with a new series of front-wheel-drive BMW models. The biggest changes will, of course, be found underhood, where we can likely expect an updated range of turbocharged and naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines.

Um, actually, the next Mini is expected to be roughly the same size as the current R56. And, if the reports are correct, will actually be lighter than the current generation thanks to the move to 3-cylinder engines (same power, less weight).

You sir are correct. That's what motoring file is reporting anyway. Don't now where autoblog is getting their info from.

Good grief almighty...the MINI grew 20% in size in 2001. Then it grew more in '07. How much more can it grow before it's no longer MINI? The current car already has massive space-efficiency issues. But leave it to the Germans to completely miss the point of this car. And spread their "size creep" contagion to it for a third consecutive generation. Sigh.

That's why I'm glad I got a 1st gen R53. I kinda figured BMW would find a way to screw it up.

Blame ever increasing impact standards your government inforces you fools. Pretty sure my mini is tiny compared to all your road hogging SUVs and trucks. I'll wave as i cut off you all going 70 in the fast lane. Still getting 15 mpg in your gas spitting V8s!

Wow. BMW should drop the Mini name. These cars are anything but mini. UGH. The customer is not always right. Lasting design and quality products are not results from pandering to the masses.

Hardly random numbers. You made a dumb comment, and I posted the facts. All the cars that you mentioned as smaller, are in fact 9 to 16 inches longer than the Mini. Retard.

Tantaeannujellob, obviously you have no idea what you are talking about, since the Rio, Accent, Fiesta, Mazda 2, Aveo, and Fit are all way bigger. MINI Length - 145.6 Kia Rio - 157.1 Accent - 162.0 Fiesta - 160.1 Mazda 2 - 155.5 Aveo - 154.3 Fit - 156.9

Either move away from iconic looks or keep a 15 year old design language. Thats the problem with creating a company based on a retro theme. Not to exciting
