2011 Kia Sorento SX – Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2012 Kia Sorento will be available with the company's hands-free UVO infotainment system, and its brand-spanking-new GDI direct-injection four-cylinder engine. With those new features, the big Kia crossover can really dance with the big guns from the likes of Ford.

Other available options include Kia's YES Essential seat treatment, which makes the seats resistant to stains and static electricity and includes an anti-bacterial chemical. That, along with an entertainment system to be reckoned with, should keep the young family demographic very happy.

The Sorento's new engine uses the same GDI setup as the upcoming 2012 Rio, but this time, it sees duty atop a 2.4-liter version of the brand's Theta II architecture. Thanks to GDI, the 2012 Sorento should close in on 200 ponies, as opposed to the old engine's 175.

For those who aren't looking to upgrade to the Sorento just yet, the new options are also available on the 2012 Sportage. Click past the break to see Kia's full press release.

If this is true, expect the Sorento to be in the 30's on hwy mpg and expect the Sportage to be closer to 34 hwy mpg. This not only embarrasses the American auto industry, but the Japanese as well. Who would have thought that Kia would have the most fuel efficient 3 row non-hybrid crossover?

Actually, if you look at the release, it says no mechanical changes for the Sportage, so I wouldn't expect fuel economy numbers to change.

Top Safety pick, 2/3's North American parts content, Assembled in Georgia, engineered in California, soon to be class leading fuel economy, advanced tech like UVO, priced thousands below the competition, and sculpted by a former Audi chief designer. Someone please find something to complain about on this vehicle other than "It's a Kia..."

you have to admit that's a good looking suv, even though the color might be giving it the extra kick. even if I don't necessarily buy one, I hope kia keeps putting the pressure on for everyone else to step up and make some great cars.

The Sorento is a class size larger than Equinox, Tucson, Escape, or CR-V. The Sorento competes with Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.

The Equinox, Sorento, and Santa Fe are actually in the same class. They share very similar dimension. The Veracruz is actually the competitor to the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.

Question: How does the Equinox, a two row, five passenger CUV, compare to other THREE row CUVs? Answer: They don't.
