When the all-new Brammo Engage MX and Encite MMX PRO electric dirt bikes take to the bumps and jumps of the Mini Moto SX Energy Crisiscross 2011 on Friday, they will be launching themselves both into the air and onto the market. The Ashland, OR company has just taken the wraps off four motocross models it's developing, and while they might not yet be dressed in production perfect plastic, it's what lies beneath that counts.

The big news here is that Brammo is bringing back the clutch and gearshift to the electric motocross experience with an integrated electric transmission (IET). Connected to an AC motor, the bikes spin up fast and sound not unlike a mini turbine. The mechatronic 6-speed is said to give these bikes a performance boost that's guaranteed to plaster a grin across your face and keep it there.

The Engage line-up will come in three flavors. There is the MX (motocross) and SMR (super moto racing) for off-road riding. These are both tentatively priced at $9,995 and will feature swappable batteries capable of holding at least 2.6 kWhs worth of fun juice. The Engage SMS (super moto street), on the other hand, is homologated for road use and may or may not have a removable battery. Price is anticipated to be in the $11,995 neighborhood.

The baby of the Brammo family is the Encite MMX PRO. This mini motocross doesn't yet have a price tag but we imagine will be lower than its big brothers. All the bikes are expected to be ready for delivery in time for the 2012 riding season. If that seems too far away, there is a chance you may be able to try one this summer at one of Brammo's expanding list of retailers.       Awesome. A transmission will make a huge difference on this bike. It's not just a performance difference that will be seen, it's also an efficiency and massive reduction in waste heat. I'd like to see more EVs get transmissions. Generally the problem is the huge jolt of torque that occurs at lower speeds, which is actually a big challenge to control.

      That's a small battery pack, I doubt the range is impressive, and a transmission won't help that.

        A transmission will help it, big time. Have you ever seen an efficiency curve for an electric motor, JP? 0% at 0RPM, gradually ramping up to 70-95% at 90% of the motor's total speed. A transmission will help keep an electric motor near maximum rpm, which will do wonders for efficiency. Don't believe me... do a google image search for 'electric motor efficiency curve'

          I've seen many efficiency curves for electric motors, including motors with transmissions. In each gear efficiency stays within a few percentage points, not a big difference. I'll stick with my statement, a transmission won't help with efficiency, not enough to notice, and certainly not a huge difference. I have a 5 speed transmission in my EV, normally I just use second gear for all my driving, from 0-65 mph. They'd get more range using the space, weight, and cost to add more batteries.

        I suppose they went with a 6-speed because that's what's available for motorcycles. I would not think any more than 3 speeds really adds anything to the operation of the bike, if that. Recall Tesla wanted to use a 2-speed transmission, and the Roadster certainly has a wider range of operating speeds than a motorcross bike.

        I agree dan, slightly better torque using a smaller & lighter motor. I am not sure that the lag introduced by shifting makes it worthwhile. They might have just chosen to use a transmission in order to give riders a more familiar experience.
