According to German site AutoBild.de, Porsche is prepping a new V8-powered flagship, and it could be wearing three digits on the back that'll strike a chord with motorsports fans. Rumor has it that this next Porsche superstar will be called the 961. If those numbers ring a bell, that's because Porsche created a 961 race car that only saw limited action. Based on the 959, the 961 ran three races before ultimately finding a home in Porsche's Stuttgart-based museum.

It's being reported that this modern 961 will be modeled after the 918 Spyder, yet will arrive in coupe form. Power will be provided by a V8, however, an electric motor will also be available to provide boost and push output up to 600 horsepower. We expect to see the flagship Porsche 961 by 2013.

The Aventador is a beast, this one is the beauty. here are some pics how it could look: http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/6223/screenshot2011050323574.jpg http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/1799/screenshot2011050323575.jpg

Rear engined turbo V8, possibly awd... that rocks! Given that Porsche never screws up with it's cars (hate the Panamera and the Cayenne as much as you want, but both cars are unmatched in their segments), this is going to be a stunner.

please enlighten me, why would you want awd and forced induction on a supercar ?? if you want those, just buy a 911 turbo/nissan GTR ;)

Why wouldn't you want one? Porsche won't stop to make n/a supercars that fast, so why not make a turbocharged awd track missile that could annihilate everything on the track? We have seen what the GTR could do with "only" 480 hp. Now imagine what Porsche could do with more hp and less weight (+ even more traction because of the rear engine layout)... you get the idea.

          Why don't you ask Bugatti?

So this'll be a 918 Spyder with a fixed roof and one less electric motor?

basically, yes. but I really don't see the need for an electric motor. it adds weight and bumps the price for the sake of fuel economy. I say leave that for the prius crowd, or just make a limited prius edition for people who actually give a damn about that shite.

Exactly. It is pointless in a performance car like a Porsche. The battery would do more in terms of hurting the performance than helping fuel economy. This sounds like another attempt to cash in on the "Green" trend. That's it.

Fix your title please, you're causing confusion. It's not a 911-based flagship, it's 918 based.

911 based or 918 based ??? I'm pretty sure there's an error in the title, since in the main article there is no mention of 911, instead it clearly states that "it will be modeled after the 918 Spyder".

961 doesn't sound as sexy as a 959 would or even a 928 - those mean something to people, 961 doesn't do anything for most.

You trust Autobild? That's a problem, because not even Germans trust them :) They might have heared the number "961" somewhere (maybe not even that!) and so there's the "news" about a new model.

As a current 911 owner (an older, air-cooled model), I keep on waiting for a decent rethink of the 911 theme so I can justify a purchase. Mechanically, Porsche obviously produces amazing cars, but the looks.... oh god, it’s really getting embarrassing. Frankly, I have given up on the styling of Porsche and I’m holding out for a used Aston Martin Vantage (4.7 model) in a few years time, because I refuse to buy something that looks like a flounder mated with a turtle. I’m glad that they’re again moving forward technically but, I simply don't care much if they haven't reinvented the aesthetics and produce something with a bit of class and balance.

Porsches aren't made to be liked by everyone. If you don't like the way their styling hase gone, buy something else (it isn't like there are no competitors). Soeaking for myself, I like the styling a lot and wouldn't like it if they changed it. Don't mess with a working recipe just to get more buyers. I'm looking at you, Lotus :(
