2012 Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec – Click above for high-res image gallery

Extra spoilers and lower side skirts can look cool, but if the car doesn't have any sort of augmented performance, it all seems pointless. Still, for those who want to give the appearance of being quick, Chevrolet will offer a line of Z-Spec dealer-installed accessories for its upcoming 2012 Sonic.

Chevrolet chose to debut its dot matrix-wrapped Sonic here at this year's New York Auto Show, sporting a set of 17-inch painted alloys and a ground effects package. Why anyone would willingly choose such a visually awkward wrap is beyond us, but remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

No performance upgrades are presently available in the Z-Spec line, but customers will be able to roll the cost of the visual accessories into their monthly car payments at purchase time. See the not-so-fast sporty Sonic for yourself in our high-res gallery below.

I was walking in the parking lot of our local Costco, past a Nissan Juke and heard a couple about 10 feet in front of me comment on how cool it looked. As they say in the car business, "there's an ass for every seat".

It was already pig-faced, now we have a horrible graphics/fake performance package, way to go GM

since seeing the new Kias announced, the Sonic all of a sudden looks stale

yeah, Iwas kind of looking forward to the Sonic, and I still kind of like it, but the Accent and the Rio kind of pushed this back a bit. Of course looks are one thing, and comfort and performance are others that will have to be tested. I like the 'smoke rings' on the hood, like the radiator blew its top or something. the rest of the graphics, not so much.

This review must be the most negative slam that can be given for no real reason! The graphics aren't that bad and it is a base car that is given some sporty dealer installed options that younger drivers might like to give it some personality! Not every driver wants added speed and in reality the majority of drivers could care less. The writer just simply wanted to slam this car and Autoblog really needs to get better writers that are better suited to providing fair information.

its hard to imagine taking this over the new Rio, especially when now there's no real sign of sportiness available. it's not a bad looking car, but it needs to be more than not bad.

It's hard to imgaine making a decision between the two without driving them, seeing them in person, or at least reading a full review of the two.

If the cheapness this car seems to exude in photos is anything like the actual cheapness exhibited by the Chevy Spark I've seen in the flesh in Europe, be ready to barf!

The Chevy Beat concept was released in 2007. How much longer do we have to wait for this warmed over DAEWOO. Yes it is sold as the Daewoo Matiz all over the world with cosmetic differences. And since 2009.

just because DAEWOO designed it doesn't mean they engineered it. Two different things. Also, this Aveo/Sonic doesn't come from a 2007 Matiz but from an updated chassis from Opel. Lastly Daewoo is a GM division still and it seems they no longer engineer cars except design a few as for all their new cars are engineered by Opel. I.e. the Opel Antara, which was the Saturn Vue and now Chevy Captiva is now sold As a Daewoo. Another is the Daewoo Alpheon, which is a rebadged Buick LaCrosse.

TRUTHHERTZ BMW, Audi and even Ford sells their cars in Europe before the USA and Toyota and Honda sell their cars in Japan first! In the USA cars are sold at a much lower price so we get our cars 18 to 24 months after the rest of the world. If you don't want to wait then it will cost much more to get these cars when they come out. I am not sure what you saw in Europe but all cars in this segment are very very base cars that we consider to be cheap.

Umm, the Spark and the Aveo/Sonic aren't the same car. Not in the slightest.

Just going by the looks of it and the fact that they're going to be using the mediocre powertrains of the Cruze, I say Chevy can keep it, I'm not buying.

        @incurhellswrath
INCURHELLSWRATH The Cruze gives you a small turbo that gets great MPG for $21k what is mediocre about that? 10 years ago 8.5 seconds to sixty was cutting edge for a good V6 and now it is common for a 1.4 Turbo! The real issue here is GM bashing when this car and the Cruze are offering a competitive product at a good price.

The 1.4T isn't mediocre. Almost 100 HP per liter and what seems to be the most torque available versus it's competitors engines at a very low rpm is FAR from mediocre.

So, I still have to ask - does it come with blue spiky hair, white gloves and red shoes?
