World Car of the Year AwardsBig congratulations go to the 2011 Nissan Leaf this morning, as it has just been named the 2011 World Car of the Year. The Leaf garnered more votes than the 2011 Audi A8 and 2011 BMW 5 Series, the other two finalists for the World Car title. In 2010, the Volkswagen Polo took home this award.

The Leaf was not the only super-efficient car to be awarded today, as the 2011 Chevrolet Volt was named Green Car of the Year. Oddly, the Volt was named 2011 North American Car of the Year, while the Leaf was merely a runner-up.

In the less-efficient realm of the industry, the 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia was named World Performance Car of the Year, and the sleek 2011 Aston Martin Rapide was given the World Design of the Year crown.

Whether you like it or not, it is hard to argue that there is a more significant vehicle to the future of the auto industry this year than the LEAF.

agree. its bewildering that people dont recognize the significance of the worlds first mass produced EV. maybe GMFanBoi is behind all these posts....

I don't think it's hard to argue that the Volt is a more significant by a very large margin (backed by all the awards it has won). The Leaf is just an electric car and not even the first, so what the big deal?

The reason the Leaf is a much better choice than the Volt is because the Leaf is the first production electric car that seats four and has all the features; safety and otherwise; that a regular car has. It is many times more a game changer than the Volt. Now if the Volt had lived up to its promise of totally separate systems it would have been a much bigger achievement. As it stands now it is a car of compromises. The Kharma will actually be closer to the original promise of the Volt than the Volt turned out to be. Granted the Kharma sells for twice the Volt's price and deliveries haven't started - they are due, what, next month?

If you think the 599 GTO or Panamera look better than the Rapide -- heck, any Aston -- there is an problem with your eyes.

How can a car with a EPA estimated range at 73 miles be the world car of the year? At least the other vehicles could travel more of the world with longer ranges and way shorter refill times. Is there a city car of the year?
