2011 World Car of the Year winners – Click above for high-res image gallery

World Car of the Year AwardsBig congratulations go to the 2011 Nissan Leaf this morning, as it has just been named the 2011 World Car of the Year. The Leaf garnered more votes than the 2011 Audi A8 and 2011 BMW 5 Series, the other two finalists for the World Car title. In 2010, the Volkswagen Polo took home this award.

The Leaf was not the only super-efficient car to be awarded today, as the 2011 Chevrolet Volt was named Green Car of the Year. Oddly, the Volt was named 2011 North American Car of the Year, while the Leaf was merely a runner-up.

In the less-efficient realm of the industry, the 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia was named World Performance Car of the Year, and the sleek 2011 Aston Martin Rapide was given the World Design of the Year crown.

      My guess is that none of these whiney people actually read the Volt article, because it is actually a pretty good system... electric drive only which can be charged with household current overnight or gasoline motor as you drive. Range is infinite if you can fill up the gas tank. Savings is huge if you mostly drive around town, but still very good on the highway. 100 mph on only electric motor meets my power needs. What Bubba Monstertruck & Bubbaette SUV need to understand is the days of cheap oil are GONE. No matter what you hear about Alaska, the Gulf, or secret reserves, the demand will continue to outstrip the supply and prices are only going to go up, & up, & up. This was projected to happen right about now over 40 years ago. Smart people (geologists & petroleum engineers) saw it coming long ago. No one listened or they decided to worry about it when the crisis came. If your wallet will still let you drive your mega horse and you have no shame, go for it. If not, get over the whining and start looking at these alternatives. Even the most ecomomically challenged can buy SH smaller 4 cyl vehicles if they want.

        You do realise that the volt is a bigger pollutant then regular cars though right and you have to own the car over 20 years to break even in the costs...Electricity comes from fossil fuels such as coal so more electricity demanded the more poluttion and then the batteries are left to deal with and are toxic and the no biodegradable plastics in the care are a pollutant and use petroleum by products not to mention those tires guess what they are made of and guess what lubercates the entire car??? yup petruleum oil and grease.

      Show me a poll that was voted on solely by WE THE PEOPLE and I will give it attention. Its like the Academy Awards, which only members are allowed to vote. Makes no sense. "lets pat ourselves on our backs even more............ The Leaf is great new technology. I hope it won ONLY for those reasons.

      This and the last presidential election prove that voters can really screw up.

      Leaf, Volt, Prius, and more to come I'm sure, and all in effort to cut consumption of gasoline derived from oil. But what they are not telling us is that oil is responsible for plastics and clothing {nylon, polyester, acrylic, and more all bi-products of oil) amongst many many many many other items. So people of America why the hell don't we drill for our own oil???????? Instead of giving money and protection to countries that would repeat 9-11 if they could. Actually they are hurting us again by gas prices, or is it our leaders doing it to us by inability to lead, and make sound decisions???

        we have plenty of oil....enviromentalists won't let us drill and oil we do produce goes mostly other countries.......remember our resources don't belong to us but to international companies that couldn't care less for the American people- kind of like our gov't these days!!

        America does drill for its own oil, However, most of the easy oil has long since gone up in smoke. There's a boom in fracking for oil in North Dakota.

          Interesting segment on CSI last night about "fracking" and how the wastewater residue from the process gets put in holding ponds to pollute the air and the ground water systems. In this case, leading to many cases of cancer in the area where the "fracking" was done.

      All these electric options are just a stop gap effort. The real leap will be made in Hydrogen. but that will take a few more years. The electric cars just take a fossil fuel and move it to another fossil fuel. The electric grid in America is not capable of handling anywhere near what they are proposing, especially if we remove nuclear energy that makes the plug in options worse.

        Same as the CFL bulbs. If half the money spent on cfl research had been applied to LED development they'd be affordable and we'd have ZERO mercury in our homes. Instead government sold out to lobbies and gave TAXPAYER money to the likes of GE (who make some $45 billion last year and paid ZERO TAXES) and then forced us to load our homes up with poison.

          CFL's were sold in the mid 1990's. I know I was buying them. LED's were not known to be a possible replacement yet. CFL's were known to have the brightness and the efficiency because of regular florescent bulbs. Until about 3 years ago there were no LED's capable of generating enough light to be a substitute.

      And my proposal for a design that would never need gas, oil, or plug in has been completely ignored by Wasington. So much for a "Green initiative." Think about it. How can they ignore a design with unlimited range, zero emissions, affordability, and the potential to create thousands of jobs? Yep, goverment at its finest.

        @Sandy
        you never said what "your design" is duffus.... BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!

          Yeah, actually I do. Patents applied for and all that. Why would I post an overview of a planet changing vehicle in such a public forum? Oh! Maybe so you could infringe on it for your own benefit. Serious investors never give up all their secrets for free. This is a plan I've been working on for the past 3 years, and I have everything ready to go. All that's lacking is the investment capitol to make it happen.. The government won't get involved because of their dependence on oil company money.. Shoot the lobbyists!

          Oh, by the way, I can't help but notice you have absolutely nothing positive to say, so I guess you might really be the "duffus" in our midst. At this point I have to ask: What's your design?
