Ken Block wreck at Rally of Portugal – Click above to watch the video after the jump

During a shakedown run before the 2011 Rally of Portugal, Ken Block wrecked his Ford Fiesta WRC car in a big way. The high-sprung rally car clipped a berm at the start of a turn, and the resulting series of flips were both violent and scary. Block and his teammate Alex Gelsomino checked out of the hospital with a clean bill of health, but the same prognosis can't be said of the car.

That means we don't feel guilty for showing you more footage of the wreck, which comes courtesy of the Monster World Rally team. The post-jump clip is over two minutes long, with the oddball goofiness we've come to expect from Block and Co. We're thinking the theme here is that of a near-death experience – we can't fathom another reason why Block would be floating around a pool, in full racing gear, with an angelic glow all around him.

Hit the jump to watch the horrific crash, which makes its entrance at 2:13, followed by a slow-motion replay.

I could have gone without the 2 minutes of random swimming pool action and gone straight to the wreck. It was a "gnarly" wreck though. Glad to hear he and his teammate are okay.

That's a pretty epic crash, but I really think all the theatrics beforehand didn't need to be there. As much as I love Block's Gymkhana and other "publicity" videos, you really can't go wrong with a straight-up rally crash video...

yeah, i was kinda annoyed with all the crap before the crash. I don't want to see weird shots of Ken swimming in a pool in his driving suit, I want to see carnage!!

This is why I love rally. It's covered in cameras and it's 100% "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". It's one of the few "sports" where the grit is real.

I think Supercross & Motocross would also be on the list of gritties sports.

If Ken spent 1/4 the time in Europe working with the Ford team that he spends making stupid ******* videos, he might finish a rally

That's a pretty good crash, but isn't that what makes rally racing, rally racing? Go on YouTube and you will find 20 minute montages of rally crashes. Just because Ken Block did it doesn't mean it's new, cooler, or 'gnarlier' than any of the MANY others that have come before him.

I dont know if Ken will be good, great, bad or whatever in a WRC car, but just remember that the GREAT late Colin Mcrae crashed everything he drove for the 1st few years too. Ken may never be good, but he can drive BETTER that anyone judging him here

+1 But it's always the case, arm chair analysts have and always will be a part of sport. Haters be hatin.

Also in the crashed everything he drove category - the late Ayrton Senna. Ken is no Ayrton Senna, but if you arent crashing, then you arent pushing the car hard enough...

wow.... didn't think I'd ever actually see his team edit all that pretentious footage into a crash vid... well I guess theirs a first time for everything... As for him "creating a brand" So far what reputation has he got? He's gone from being a really cool edgy video maker to a bit of a joke as we just expect him to crash and its considered a shock when he finishes a race. I dare say he should enter formula D as that's really more of a show case for his talents (I didn't mean that as a jab I actually think he does quite well in structured environments and clearly has car control skills that would set him up quite well for drift events)

Who dreamt up the editing? Would have been great without the pool fluff intermissions. A sparkle of that in the beginning and end would have sufficed and shaved a minute off the video.

Best crash since Colin McRae's in Rally Great Britan 2001

I give Ken Block huge respect when it comes to driving, especially gymkhana...but he holds no guns to the players like Miko Hirovonen or Sebastian Loeb in the WRC. BUT, it's great to hear both Ken and his co-drivers doing well. Looking forward to seeing more from Ken in the future.
