2012 Kia Soul spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

According to a newsletter sent out by the New York Auto Show organizers, Kia will debut its refreshed 2012 Soul hatchback as part of next week's festivities. In addition to a slightly revised front fascia complete with LED running lamps, the funky hatch will receive a number of powertrain enhancements for the 2012 model year.

Most significantly, the Soul will benefit from the addition of new six-speed transmissions, likely in both manual and automatic forms. According to Kia, this means the 2012 Soul will achieve nearly 35 miles per gallon on the highway – a healthy boost over the current car's fuel economy rating of 24/30 mpg city/highway when equipped with the 2.0-liter engine and five-speed manual shifter.

As we reported earlier, Kia will also debut the 2012 Rio in New York, boasting new direct-injection technology and fuel economy ratings of over 40 mpg. Stay tuned for the full details next week.

They're probably talking about the "Craptour"

I will be at the auto show on the 23rd or 24th, can't wait. I already liked the Soul a lot, this makes it so much better. Perhaps it's getting the powertrain from the Sonata. I also wish they'd offer navigation. The Cube and xB do....

        Oops, I meant the Elantra
I have the Soul + which has 16" tires which helps the ride tremendously. A bit noisy but my music drowns it out. 6 speed would be great and the looks are a choice... I like them.

The transmission, drone at 65 MPH and road noise were my biggest complaints with the Soul. This should alleviate those issues. Nice vehicle otherwise.
Having driven a few rental Souls, I found that noise is the one thing that bothers me about this car. Lets hope Kia adds sound dampening and fixes a few exterior bits to cut down on wind-noise. I wouldn't mind having this fuel-efficient and nimble hatch in the garage.

The engine was also no great thing. The 1.6 was a good one, but only offered in the bottom trims. A good 2.0 would be much welcome. That's why I went with a Scion, they're nearly identical cars, otherwise.

I hope they dont fuss with it too much, I love the styling of the current Soul, its unique.
Yea! The new engines! I've been hoping they would swap out the engines for something a bit more efficient, and a six-speed manual. Now all they need to do is make the manual available on higher up trim levels and non-black leather on the interior. And don't make leather only available on some special edition with crappy vinyl graphics pasted on it.
I'm with you. Had they had a fully-loaded edition with manual, I'd have been more interested (and more power too).

Unfortunately, Hyundai/Kia never gives us manual transmissions on anything but base models. Try configuring a Tucson and you'll see what I mean. You have the choice of: a) a depressing, bare-bones with a manual transmission or b) a nice, loaded car, with an auto tranny.

I would have bought a Tucson in a heartbeat, had I had the choice, because I like it.

They used to offer manuals kitted out. I used to have an Elantra GT 5 door- loaded w/ leather and a 5 speed. I loved it, and frankly, I miss it. I know you can get the Genesis coupe with a manual, and the veloceter will likely have one, but PLEASE, give us the option! Anything with a turbo should automatically have the option, otherwise, whats the point of the tubo?

I don't know that I'd trust those organizers - the NY Autoshow app is proclaiming that the "2011 Honda Accord Wagon" will be making an appearance.
Maybe that's their way of warning everyone that the Crosstour will be present ;-)
IMO the Soul didn't need a revised front fascia, it needed some cosmetic attention in the rear. The taillights and hatch looked pretty crude to me-- otherwise, I like this little box. Revised transmissions are most welcome.

Funny, I always thought the tail end was the neatest part.
Looks like Kia is quickly becoming one of the most fuel efficient automaker in the US, and by summer their whole model line-up will be fresh and good looking. Other automakers should be taking notice.
I mean i like it, it is something that is a little unusual, but i feel like Soul lacks that gotta have it stuff. Much like that Kia Veloster concept.
Uh the Veloster is a Hyundai...

I have a 2010 Kia Soul ! (exclaim). I just have a few gripes with it: (1) the 4-speed CVT - just awful at freeway speed. Set the cruise at 70-75 and the RPM is 3000-3500. Thank God the sound system drowns out most of the sound. Put a 6-speed tranny in there and get (possibly) better fuel economy. Get the RPMs down! , (2) the ride quality - really harsh on Michigan freeways. Any road imperfection can be felt. (3) the tires - 225/45/18. The OE tires are totally crap in the winter. If anyone buys a Soul, invest in a set of winter tires for safety. Other than that, it's a decent vehicle. If Kia mates an AWD system with the Soul (possible talk on it) and fixes some of the other "minor" issues, I'll get another one.
KIA should drop the ridiculously oversized 18" wheels/tires.
225/45 17 should be the optional vanity size

I do like the design of the 18" wheel, keep that but scale it down. and upsize the front brake rotor with the 2.0 engine.

@NightFlight - Look at the specs on Kia's website. "Valve Gear - 4 Valves per Cylinder Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT)" and lower on the specs page "Transmission: Electronically Controlled 4-speed Automatic, Overdrive" I didn't make it up!!
There is no such thing as a 4 speed CVT....

The Soul has a traditional automatic transmission.
@NightFlight - I retract my statement (automotive ignorance) about CVT. As soon as I typed it and hit enter it was too late. To all those out there, I apologize.

        It does shift poorly though!
