John Deere Walmart rampage – Click above to view video after the jump

A couple in Richmond Hill, Georgia Ontario were returning from the car wash when they noticed a strange late-night gathering at the local Walmart. Curious, they stopped to see what the fuss was about, and were confronted with the spectacle of a driver-less John Deere Tractor careening around the parking lot.

The tractor in question wasn't just your regular, run-of-the-mill lawn tractor, either. No, the phantom tractor was a four-wheel-drive Deere equipped with enough snowplow to clear Vail in January. The tractor spent five minutes jogging circles around the parking lot, gouging the side of the Walmart and annihilating an unsuspecting Suzuki SX4 and Toyota Corolla while slackjawed onlookers stood by doing nothing and area police literally drove in circles.

Eventually, someone with enough cojones decided to climb aboard the wayward farm machinery and try to stop the madness... but did they succeed? Click past the jump to find out for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Marshall!

Thank the lord the police showed up! (I wonder how many crimes were committed while those two 'officers' were piddling around that parking lot)

Seriously? It took all 4 minutes until someone tried to jump inside the open tractor?
guys, come on... this isn't exactly a speeding getaway car. It's a tractor. You can speed walk to its door. The only way you could trip up was if your shoelace was untied.
And run the risk of being crushed under one of those big wheels? No way I'd try that unless lives were at stake.
Maybe nobody wanted to ruin the spectacle.

        @SmoothMarx,

The average person can run about 5 MPH -- that tractor could easily have been going faster than that and simply not looked like it. Speed is harder to judge at night and at a distance, especially when it's in a circular motion. I'm not arguing that it wouldn't be possible to jump in, I'm just saying that it's not worth the risk of getting killed or seriously injured by failing.
@SmoothMarx, it's always possible to slip. What then?

Actually, maybe nobody wanted to be running in front of those massive rear tires trying to hop into the cab just to prevent damage to a Corolla and SX4 -- what if you tripped trying to get in? Nothing against those cars, but they're not worth risking your life over.

The police had guns didn't they? They could have shot out the tires or the radiator to try and immobilize it...

I'd love to see a police officer try to explain why he/she decided to discharge their firearm at an unmanned tractor in a parking lot with civilians in it.

It's not the worst career move a police officer could make, but it's up there.

I've never shot a tractor tire, but I'm fairly sure that it wouldn't care about 9mm rounds. The sidewall is very thick and desgined for working long hours around things that can damage normal tires. Given the shape of a tire sidewall and the movement of the tractor, firing at it is just asking for ricochets in a somewhat unpredictable direction.

Even if you did puncture a tire, Its not going to stop moving. Its throttle is holding it at a certain RPM. It will automaticly feed more fuel when the load increases to maintain that RPM. So it will burn more fuel with a flat tire or 4... but its not going to just stop. Like others said, it would also change it from the safe and predictable path it was taking.

If anything that'd just make the tractor more unpredictable.

So much for parking in an out of the way spot to avoid a door ding.

I was there when it happened, pretty crazy, the wall of Wal-Mart was all smashed up and debris of the cars were everywhere. It was 5 minutes from my house if anyone searches Wal-Mart in High Tech Rd in Richmond Hill, it happened right there at around 10-11pm
        • 3 Years Ago
I want to know how it started. Why was there a tractor going 'round in circles in a Wal-Mart parking lot? Did someone do this intentionally? I mean, the things don't just appear out of nowhere and start driving themselves. How did this happen?
The Sam's club turned into a Wal-Mart in the past year it was getting horrible business so now it's a Wal-Mart supercenter with the groceries and everything. I know the one you are talking about, the Wal-Mart near the Bayview Highschool, but there's one also in High Tech Rd near Best Buy and Canadian Tire.

I'm a little confused... I lived on Yonge St/16th Avenue in Richmond Hill for a couple of years before moving to Chicago, but I don't remember a Walmart being there near HWY 7 and the 407-ETR. There was Staples, Sam's Club, Canadian Tire... but no Walmart. The Walmart in Richmond Hill was further north which didn't have the powerlines in the background like we see in this video clip.

Perhaps things changed in the past 3-4 years in my old neighbourhood.

I was there when the tractor was rolling around, but from what I heard a person drove the tractor there and jumped off the tractor or forgot to put it back into neutral? (I don't know how a tractor works) and that's how it started.

Does anyone know where this happened???

LOL even more at you two voting each other up. I have been to Ontario, spent three nice weeks there actually, and it was like Little Paris with all the Frenchies running around.

        Sacrebleu, not my SX4!

I don't know where in Ontario you visited, but unless it was close to the Quebec border, or Northern Ontario, I can assure you (having been born here, and lived here for 40+ years) that in Southern Ontario, you're pretty much only going to find francophones in areas where French immersion is offered in the school system. You're far more likely to find European and Asian languages being spoken.

I heard Chinese, personally towards the end.

Dude, they are speaking Korean or Chinese, I believe. That sure as hell wasn't French in the background.

      Useless cops were useless.

Seriously, the thing wasn't going faster than running speed, yet they just followed it in circles like that would help. Why exactly didn't someone (ahem, a cop) try and catch up and hop in?

What was their plan if it happened to steer itself onto the roadway and into actual traffic? Wait for it to run out of gas?!
