2012 Volvo S60 IIHS crash tests – Click above for high-res image gallery

Volvo can stick another feather in its safety cap. The 2012 S60 has officially been awarded an IIHS Top Safety Pick judgement by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. That means the sedan managed to net top ratings in all IIHS crash tests, including front, side, rollover and rear evaluations. Vehicles awarded the Top Safety Pick designation must also come standard with electronic stability control.

According to the IIHS, it's been a while since the S60 has carried the institute's highest honor. The vehicle's previous generation had no problem netting good ratings in both front and rear tests, but was only rated as acceptable in side impact evaluations. Additionally, the new roof strength tests weren't in place for the vehicle's last iteration. IIHS says that Volvo improved the design of the S60 enough to net higher side impact ratings and pass the new rollover tests with flying colors.

IIHS says that the roof of the S60 stood up to 4.95 times the weight of the vehicle. Currently, the federal standard is only requires a vehicle to withstand a force equivalent to 1.5 times its weight. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Volvo S60 earns TOP SAFETY PICK award

The 2012 Volvo S60 earns the Institute's TOP SAFETY PICK award for good performance for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, plus standard electronic stability control (ESC).

The previous generation of the S60 earned good ratings in the Institute's front and rear evaluations, but for 2005-09 it was rated acceptable in the side impact test. The previous model wasn't evaluated for roof strength in rollover crashes. The new model improves to good in the side impact test, and earns a good rating in the roof strength test. The roof of the S60 withstood a force equal to 4.95 times the car's weight. By comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight. Institute research demonstrates that occupants of vehicles with strong roofs are much less likely to sustain serious injuries in rollover crashes.

In addition to good crash test ratings, winners must have ESC, an important crash-avoidance feature, which is standard on the S60.

      Volvo's have always been safe, but 4.95 times it's weight on the roof? That's insane.

      The new S60 looks great, and it's finally a 3-Series competitor, with it's 300hp I-6 with MORE torque than BMW's. The closest Audi I see is the S4 (which is still great). Good job Volvo, combining your expected safety with a great car. Kudos.

        Yeah, the E-Class didn't do well either. Plenty of midsize sedans (Accord, Camry, Malibu, Legacy, Galant and others) were all Good for side impacts by 2005. And the S40 only matched the Acceptable score of the same-age Corolla and Cobalt and fell behind the Prius, Jetta and Impreza.

        What's more, Volvo could have updated its old designs to improve crash safety, and didn't. Volvo has been for years selling below-average crash test performance on its reputation, and is only getting the S60 to "Top Safety Pick" status well after that became the norm across price brackets.
