Ken Block crashes his Fiesta WRC car – Click above to watch video after the jump

At the Rally of Portugal, Ken Block and teammate Alex Gelsomino were in the midst of shakedown runs when things suddenly got messy. Block clipped the inside of a turn and it sent his Ford Fiesta WRC car flying sideways.

The Fiesta rolled once before smacking the ground and rolling several more times. It was a violent accident that sent Block and Gelsomino to the hospital, though both men are reported to be uninjured. The car, however, is toast.

This gives Block a bit more time to prepare for the next leg of the WRC circuit, which will take place at Rally Argentina. In the meantime, you can click past the jump to see the reason he won't be competing at Rally of Portugal.

Could have been a nice triple axle if they stuck the landing.

AutoBlog.com - Now being sponsored by Haterade! The favorite drink of Keyboard Commando's all across the internets!

He slid wide, clipped it and flipped it. It's part of him practicing and trying to become a better driver. Good thing Loeb or Hirvonen or any of the other "real drivers" never did anything like this...

BTW, they just posted something about Hennessey... GO GET HIM!!!

      Gymkhana 4?
That snap oversteer and the excellent turn-in on the Focus did him in. Close, but this ain't horseshoes.
Nice air and double pirouette, though.

I guess it's pretty hard to look impressive without a bunch of runs doing the same thing over and over on a flat surface and bunch of takes with a ton of editing and cool music.

Block and Pastrana should stick to making scripted runs instead of demolishing cars trying to play with the big boys.

He wasn't that far out of line when he launched it. I'm surprised nobody else lost it on that corner.
We didn't see it from the opposite angle though, which is likely the better angle anyway to see what actually happened.

He could have overcooked that first corner and was unable to be where he needed to be for the second. Practice makes perfect, and practice also improves pacenotes.

        Block needs more practice....

Maybe americans should stay out of racing events that involve more than circles.

        @ trustedcarsalesman

        Exactly.

Can we add soccer, tennis, and F1 to that list as well?

        @gtv4rudy

Is there something you have against American motorsports? Because you seem to disagree with a lot of things related to American motorsports.

Johnny O'Connell is currently racing and hasn't even reached the age of 50. Boris Said isn't even 50...yet. Randy Pobst wasn't even old enough to win a championship or win a race half a century ago. Mario Andretti retired in the early 90s while at the top of his game. Tommy Kendall is the most winningest driver in the SCCA Trans Am Series, nobody has yet to surpass his records. He raced up until the early 2000s, by the way.

Seriously though? Why does it matter when they won? They're American and are legends in sports car racing. LEGENDS. Not mediocre drivers. Guys that have been inducted into some of the most prestigious hall of fames in the world. Guys that have been used to compare today's drivers to.

Somebody should have told him that you cannot edit real WRC races like he does with gymkhana videos...
        Do. Not. Agree.

We've had plenty of successful drivers here in America, maybe not quite at the F1 and WRC level but you can't say we are terrible at everything that doesn't involve an oval track.

Get out of here with that nonsense.
        Hmmm...

        Dan Gurney
        Ivan "Ironman" Stewart
Rod & Rhys Millen (they're American citizens with a Kiwi background. You might notice American flag on both Rhys' and Rod's cars)
        Mario & Michael Andretti
        Johnny O'Connell
        Randy Pobst
        Boris Said
        AJ Foyt
        Al Unser, Sr. and Jr
        Bobby Unser
        Roger Mears
        Tommy Kendall

Want me to keep going? Or do you already feel stupid from that list and the continuous responses that disagree with you?
        nice one!...

and too many members who are freaking out ;)
How about Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti?
Maybe if something other than Nascar was televised here, kids growing up could aspire to make right-handed turns too...
I know! Guys like Mario Andretti, A. J. Foyt, Dan Gurney and Ivan Stewart suck!

        Get lost jackass.
First, they should start to compete in FIA championship and mesure themselves to world class driver. Block is trying is best to change that. Unfortunately he hasn't managed to score a single point in WRC despite having a unlimited budget.
Um, we're really good at ovals. And straight lines. :D
      • 3 Years Ago
      Ken Block sucks.
        can't upboat you enough.
Yeah, and you look so cool.
ken block is such a tool and he sucks at driving.
Ken Block sucks at driving? You have to be kidding.

While he isn't the best at WRC I'd say he has more talent and better car control skills than 99% of the people that post on this site.

While he might not be the best, he definitely doesn't suck.
How'd I know this AB post was gonna have tons of haters? Sheesh.

Seriously, Ken Block is not a bad driver, nor should he stick to gymkhana only. Comments like that make me laugh and want to ask those individuals "do you think you can do better?" Cuz if you really think you can do better, Id love to see you try.
