General Motors has named LG Chem, the firm that manufactures the lithium-ion cells that partially power the automaker's plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, its 2010 Corporation of Year. GM also selected 82 companies from aroud the world to receive the automaker's 2010 Supplier of the Year award, announcing those recipients at its 19th annual Supplier of the Year presentation held at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI.
GM's Supplier of the Year award recognizes outside contributions that have assisted the automaker in achieving its goals. For LG Chem, being named GM's 2010 Corporation of the Year is, without a doubt, due to the extensive time and effort the firm put into the development of suitable li-ion cells for Chevy's breakthrough extended-range electric vehicle.

As great as this is for GM, it's unlikely that the Volt will be LG Chem's one-hit wonder. The Korean company is currently developing li-ion batteries for at least ten other automakers, including Ford, Renault and Hyundai.
