Chris Bangle, the controversial former head of BMW design, has joined forces with Samsung to oversee the design of notebooks and phones. Bangle, you may recall, left BMW in 2009 after 17 years to focus on his own design projects.
According to Samsung, Bangle is operating as an outside influence on the design of their phones and laptops and will still work on his own projects outside of the company. The American designer set up Chris Bangle and Associates shortly after leaving BMW, and has been working on designing yachts and electronics ever since.

Samsung says the move is an effort to emphasize its new focus on the design of their electronics and move the brand upmarket. Samsung says it will set up a European design center specifically for Bangle and send 10 or so researchers from the company to work with him on new design ideas.

It's hard for me to pass up an article on Bangle whome I hold responsible for years of BMW design bungles. I love how he's always credited with developing a new design 'language' - I'm either illiterate or dislexic as I only understood the clumsiness
and ugliness in his designs. He's probably quite well off so why doesn't he just buzz
off or at least keep his sophisticatedly explained but grossly misshapen designs to himself. A pompous jerk whose flaky designs will dog him to the end of his days.

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves.

Exactly. I have nothing to add here.

        What jokes?

I, for one, welcome the idea of a heavy, misshapen, unintuitive TV set.

      Arrogant [expletive].

      He is NOT winning.

Proof is - they forced him to hide his untidy Bangle buttocks in this press photo. If he was truly proud of his design you'd see him grabbing his ankles with a big turd eating grin on his face framed by his Just-For-Men died beard.

I love Bangle's designs. Can't wait to see what he does for Samsung!

This sounds awesome. I love the amount of risk and innovation chris always brings to the table.

Say what you want about Chris Bangle, but his designs are still influencing new cars today.

And his M Coupe design is still one of my favorite cars of all time.

"He even argued that the 'Bangle Butt' was due to the fact that his team didn't get time to finish their original concept"

Where did you read that? The Bangle Butt was always explained as helping add rigidity to the structure of the vehicle. No designer would EVER say they didn't have time to finish it.

"Say what you want about Chris Bangle, but his designs are still influencing new cars today."

        Unfortunately.
True, but more in the sense that many of his creations helped to show new designers how not to design a car.
He even argued that the 'Bangle Butt' was due to the fact that his team didn't get time to finish their original concept - sorry Chris but one of a designer's qualities needs to be the ability to finish a design within a deadline, I'm sure the owners of the $60k 7-series are really happy about driving around in an unfinished car.
I enjoy looking at many concept cars from car shows, even if they are 'ugly', it's nice to see the direction the designer is trying to take - that doesn't mean that I want to drive around in one or that it's a good idea to push it straight into production.
Thankfully it looks like the new BMW design chief has generally done a good job in fixing the mistakes.

compare the current new x3 & 5 series to the older ones made under Bangle.. That is why Bangle is a great designer. It amazes me how the older 5 series and the current 3 series is still so beautiful after many years.....
