Click above to watch the video after the jump

Anyone who's ever seen videos from the annual Car and Driver Lightning Lap spectacular knows that the legendary magazine can also do high-flying motion pictures. Shooting track-ready sports cars gliding around the track is one thing, but can C/D keep our attention with a bit of humor?

Car and Driver technical writer and Autoblog Podcast veteran Mike Austin and his cohorts took the reins of four rental cars to see which can win the Rental-Car Olympics. The four participating vehicles are the Mustang Convertible, an all-wheel-drive Cadillac CTS, a 1984 2010 Lincoln Town Car and the hapless Jeep Compass. And don't expect 0-60 times or hot laps; Austin and company instead opted to judge the four vehicles on attributes like "Sumo Wrestling," and "Parking Brake Assisted Parallel Parking."

If that doesn't make you want to hit the jump, we're thinking you'll never guess which of these vehicles can go 63 miles per hour in reverse, easily besting the competition in a backwards lap. Hit the jump for some very funny stuff.

        Sea Urchin:
That Top Gear stuff you are thinking of was taken from C&D. They did a sub-$1K used car comparo in 1997, with a Camaro Berlinetta, Rabbit (modified to have some GTI parts) and an RX-7.

Battle of the beaters. Sound familiar?

More like Car & Driver borrowing a page from Car & Driver 1981.

I don't subscribe to C&D, this is awesome.

        Thanks AB!

I guess C&D is borrowing a page from Top Gear.

Lincoln is a joke it doesn't deserve to be in the same contest as Cadillac!

        @GMFanBoi

Was Leland rolling when Caddy made the Catera? Or the whole era that followed? heh!

Why can't everyone just like cars and trucks for what they are and what they do instead of being total dewsh-bags just because a certain logo isn't on it!

I can understand loving domestics or whatever because you support your country, but that doesn't mean you can't give the competition a nod out of respect!

        Dear GM fan boy,

Cadillac was almost literally created by Henry Ford.
And the Town Car is a great car. Drive one. It's like the poor man's Rolls Royce.

        Too bad it's being discontinued.

        Thanks.

A better Rental Car Olympics event? Trying to convince the customer that the 2010 Chevy Malibu is a Fullsize, not a Midsize.

(My friend competed in this even last night at the Hertz in Newark Airport. She didn't know whether to blame the company, or Jersey in general.)

I'd have to say my favorite part of those Olympics was the watermelons on the cones.
      Nice touch there.

They got to get a vehicle with a Mercedes transmission so they can get TWO reverse gears!
Because Car and Driver is so relevant.

this is why you NEVER buy a rental car...LOL... love it

Why would anyone need a 60mph reverse to speed???
        Why would you NOT?!

If C&D is striving to be Top Gear Dead Tree, then I might pick up a copy. I enjoyed this.

The most useful piece of info to take away from this is how well the Sumo Wrestling match between the Mustang and Town Car illustrated the advantages of a limited-slip differential.
I'd take the Town Car, thank you!
