Audi A6 Avant spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

We've just had out first stint behind the wheel of the new-for-2012 Audi A6 sedan, destined to arrive on North American soil this fall. And while Audi is moving forward on the hybrid version of its stylish new four-door, the German automaker has been spotted testing the trusty wagon variant that will likely be revealed later this year (Frankfurt Motor Show sounds about right).

We're eager to see how the new A6's new styling works with the larger hind quarters, though it appears that Audi is using a more rakish rear hatch design (limiting the cargo area's usefulness?). Expect interior and powertrain fittings to be carried over unchanged from the sedan.

Audi has always offered the A6 Avant here in the United States, so we don't have much reason to doubt that this new iteration will also be sold Stateside. Granted, the wagon hasn't exactly sold in great volumes here in the U.S., but if there wasn't a business case for it on our shores, the automaker would have likely canned the current model by now.

Scroll through our high-res gallery below to see the A6 Avant prototype frolicking in the snow.

I love wagons! This looks very good already.

One word, Audi, if you give it to us: manual. Please?

I have the current generation A6 Avant and I love it! Here is hoping the C7 will also pear in Avant form here, I'll buy one for sure.

Trying to find where I read it, but I swear I saw the C7 Avant will not be coming to the US.

Found it... admittedly a forum post but refers to actual dealer memorandums:

Bums me out as I am a major Avant fan and dearly miss my old one. Would love a TDI C6 allroad... but alas, no. At least not until I get a place overseas!

I adore the Audi Avants. BUT Audi of America is completely out of their minds with the pricing.
Want an A4 Avant? be prepared to shell out $3k over the sedan
Want an A6 Avant? the premium over the sedan is a mind blowing $9k
That's NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS more for the same car just because it has a hatch in the back.

And Audi just shrugs and wonders why they can't sell wagons in the US.

Thought they were going to incorporate some of the cargo elements from the A1?

Kind of a luxury Subaru outback....

Audi has always made the best looking wagons! Even look better than the sedans most of the time... I'm still lusting after the Euro-only RS6 Avant....

It's only been the last two gen of A6/100 Avant that were brick-like in the hind-quarters Kammbacks. The first 2 (the 100LS and 1st gen 5000, for Americans) were fastback silhouette 5DRs. Even the aero 5000/100 (the first gen Avant to sell in the US) had a relatively fast backlight.

Here's hoping they don't spoil the rear, that the angular face grafts well to a wagon, and that it continues the trope of lightening the '12 sedan started. Who would have known audi would be sporting a luxo barge almost 400lbs lighter than the closest bmw equivalent (A6 3.0T vs 535i xDrive), hell or 200lbs lighter than the rwd model, and quicker than either? Yes. A6 3.0T quattro avant please, just make it work visually, everything else is already class leading.

And considering BMW seems to dislike avant customers in north america, the A6 3.0T Avant should have zero issues throttling the 535i xDrive GT.

I always read your comments on Audi related posts, Zamafir, because they speak my mind. Thank you sir.

        Actually I want the 4.2L V8
        Pleaaase?
Any point of the camo? Same boring design.
Exactly! Maybe they put the camouflage on to draw attention to it, without it on no one would notice it is actually a new car!

The A6 Avant seems to be more popular than the A4, and yet they still sell even the most current model in an avant in America. I can't imagine they won't offer the A6 when this new one hits. Not to mention now that BMW has abandoned that market, there's more of the pie available. Please don't let us Avant drivers down!
