Lotus, the automaker that defines what it means to "add lightness," has created an even more stripped-out version of its already flyweight Elise. Called the Club Racer, this lighter two-seater will make its debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Elise Club Racer is a full 52 pounds lighter than the standard car, and Lotus achieved this by removing the noise insulation and using a motorsport-derived lightweight battery. This might not seem like an enormous weight savings, but when you consider that the base Elise already weighs in under the 2,000-pound mark, even a small weight reduction is noticeable.

To make the Club Racer even more special, Lotus has fitted a sport setting for the car's Dymanic Performance Management (DPM) system. This advanced driving aid allows less-experienced drivers to feel at the top of their game, and can be completely shut off for the more experienced enthusiasts.

Look for the Elise Club Racer to go on sale in the near future, priced from £27,500 ($44,590 based on current exchange rates). Currently, it's unclear whether or not the Club Racer will be available in the United States, but we should have more details after the car's official debut in Geneva in just a few weeks. Anyone harbouring under the misapprehension that Lotus might be moving away from performance through lightweight only needs to take a quick ride in the new 1.6 Lotus Elise Club Racer to know that's definitely not the case. The bright engineers at Lotus put even the lightest of Lotus' modern cars on a diet and managed to shed a further 24kg.

So how did Lotus manage to make one of the lightest models on the market even lighter? The engineers behind the Elise Club Racer took a stripped-to-the-bare-bone approach visualised by the body-coloured seats but materialised in many ways such as the motorsport derived lightweight battery and the deletion of noise insulation. Attention to even the smallest of details has ensured that Lotus' passion for performance through lightweight has been translated throughout the car.

For the first time ever an Elise variant comes complete with a Sport setting for the DPM (Dynamic Performance Management) allowing even the less experienced sports car drivers to feel at the top of their game, while the ability to switch it off completely will please the more established track orientated drivers. DPM combined with improved agility courtesy of Lotus finely tuned sport suspension and an adjustable anti-roll bar will make the Elise Club Racer equally versatile for both road and race track fun.

This car epitomises everything that's cool about the Elise – it's fast, raw, responsive and a huge amount of fun to drive."

Quality throughout the vehicle has been a top priority, highly regarded component suppliers such as Eibach for springs and Bilstein for dampers ensure that the Elise Club Racer is a car of substance as well as style.
The Elise Club Racer pleases the eye as well as the soul with a choice of six striking colours (Sky Blue, Saffron Yellow, Ardent Red, Aspen White, Matt Black and Carbon Grey) and bespoke design elements that emphasise the character of the car.

It's pocket pleasing too, at £27,500 / €34,450* / CHF48,900, the Elise Club Racer marks the new entry level sports car from Lotus. And with the Elise standard of just 149g CO2/km plus the weight reduction, the new Club Racer provides maximum fun without so much of the green-guilt usually associated with high performance driving.

      Though heavier than some , ktm xbow & clones
      I'd take this over theirs - looks like a real car for one compared to the others
      but also because it has my favorite car shocks and springs !
      Every car I buy I check to see if they carry them . - for Eibach springs - pro series
      and Bilstein shocks - engineered not just to be good shocks but engineered differently to make them more reliable as well .

        Sadly I have never owned one but I have driven a mates a few times and it is worth getting into debt or wrecking your marriage over! It is such a great little car and as someone said on another post 'Colin Chapman' would be proud of it. There is only one car better and that's a Exige!
        As for being light other than an Ariel Atom or a Pixie Fart there is very little else that's as light and strong, the secret to its success.

        i was actually thinking relative to a porsche boxster or cayman this car is supper cheap. Its amazing how well this car ages. the real ansewer to your question is limited production drives up cost.

        Why can't everything be 10k cheaper?

        This is a special edition car. With limited numbers comes a higher price and, hopefully, better resale value.

        It sounds small, but it represents about 2.5% of the total weight of the car. Also, by going with a lightweight battery, it removes weight that is higher and to the back of the car (the battery is in the boot, just over the rear axle). For a car that has a focus of performance through lightweight, it's not an insignificant amount of weight.

      I've liked my fair share of cars in my day but no car swept me off my feet like the Elise did , too rich for me and too low , but boy did I want one .
      Who uses GLUE the way they do
      Who makes cars , production , as lightweight as Lotus can
      The closest I'll get to their lightness is the upcoming next gen lightweight Mazdas
      I've got the hots for the next gen really light weight Mazda 2 with 14 to 1 compression (more torque ) and a 2 liter d.i. motor ! MORE zoom zoom , thats as close as I'll get to Lotus , but with better visability .
