Jay Leno takes his Corvette Z06 out for a virtual spin – Click above to watch video after the jump

A few years back, we wrote about the Drag Tag simulator setup in Australia. It allows you to use your own car in a virtual environment that simulates hundreds of locations. Time of day and weather conditions can change and the whole experience sounds like a fun way to waste a few hours. Jay Leno was recently paid a visit by the Tag simulator crew and they brought an example of their setup into Leno's garage.

With his yellow Chevrolet Corvette Z06 strapped into the dyno, Jay takes a tour of the simulators various tracks and driving conditions. The rolling road allows Leno to push the car as hard as he pleases with no legal or safety repercussions.

A machine makes sure air is blowing into the front of the car while an extractor pulls gases from the rear. It's a slick setup that would look great bolted into the floor of the Autoblog garage. Click past the jump to watch Jay take his Vette for a virtual spin, and join us in dreaming of owning such a setup.

Chris, you are quite right. I missed the black rear tire/brake cooler. I fixed on the front one and thought that Leno had accessorized the rear one with a black insert. Hard to tell becausae i didn't watch the whole clip, skipped aorund and did not see the front end of the car.

I'm pretty sure he definitely already takes all his cars on the road.

Seriously, what a waste of gas!

For God's sake, it's a flipping Corvette, take it out on the road, man!

        WTF!?!?!
Nah, I don't get it. No wind if you're in a Miata or S2000, no lateral g-forces if you are on a clover leaf, and no push-you-in-the seat acceleration if you're in a Corvette!

Seriously. You aren't really driving, so why exactly do you need to have a real engine burning real gas to go exactly nowhere? If you are playing a video game, play a video game. If you want some quality track time with a real car, drive a real car.

        This is just asinine.

C6 Z06. It is identical to a yellow one that I own. Note the side scoops-ie. the brake and wheel coolers. This is the latest version of the Z06.
Dude, you should seriously consider getting glasses. That's a C5 Z06.
But you are all right that it would be a serious waste to use up mileage in this car on a simulator. By the way, my car has a Lingenfelter air intake system and a borla exhaust raising normally aspirated HP to 550 or so. it is much more fun to take this car onto the open highway.

      Denim shirt alert. Fail.

Try doing this with a FWD or AWD car and taking a turn...
        Good, then.
he specificly said only RWD cars.
Sooo... you have to ship yourself and your car to Australia to use this... why not just drive to a racetrack? I'm pretty sure California has a few...
The car on the picture is not a Z06...
        Nah, man, you're wrong. That's like a 2003-2004 Z06.

The newer ones don't have the lower, rear air scoop. The older ones DID.
        Without a doubt this is a C5 Z06.

I have no idea why you think it is not.
Looks like C5 Z06 to me...
Actually, that is indeed a Z06. Note the backglass, the brake cooling ducts in front of the rear wheels, and badging on the front fender
        • 3 Years Ago
It's a C5 Z06 with optional tigershark body kit and swaped LS7. Know your stuff before you make an ass out of yourself.

      Sucks to be poor.

LOL ! When Jay is running at the end. LOL !

      Well done.

Quite possibly the lamest piece of tech I've ever seen. Wasted gas, wear and tear on the engine and no practical application.

It might be cool if it just plugged into an OBDII port and you used your car as a virtual driving sim controller WITHOUT running the engine and instead strapped your car on to something that simulated G forces.

      Fail.
I'm just thinking that's all that wear and tear on your engine... to play a video game.

Oh well I supposed when you've got the money to collect supercars like they're hot wheels as Leno does, it doesn't matter.

If you have a custom sports car, do you pay to go have it dynoed? Ever been part of a sports club that has dyno days?

If so, rather than just a regular boring strapping down of your vehicle for raw hp/torque numbers, it would be entertaining I think to pay a bit extra and actually compare not just your engine performance to buddies but your performance on the same course in your own vehicles as well.

And it still leaves some wiggle room for cop-out, as you can say "well, it doesn't take into account my sticky tires, big brakes, and suspension kit...." =p
      • 3 Years Ago
That's great and all but how do you put a vett sideways for the sheer joy of making smoke on tarmac? I mean why else would you want a Z06 on an empty track? Go straight? Com'on.
