Honda looks to be hanging its recovery hopes on the U.S. light truck market. According to Automotive News, North America was the only market to see sales growth for the company during the last quarter. The six-percent jump was fostered largely by the Odyssey and the CR-V, and Honda hopes to be able to keep up that momentum with a new version of the popular CUV. Reportedly set to debut by fall of this year, the 2012 CR-V will be a complete generational model change, though the company hasn't revealed too many details about the new vehicle just yet.

Globally, Honda has seen its sales fall off by around seven percent, with operating profit declining by 29 percent. The company hopes that focusing on light trucks will help boost the company's total U.S. volume to 1.28 million vehicles by the end of its fiscal year.

News of the next-generation CR-V goes a long way toward explaining why the 2010 and 2011 models received such skimpy updates. Engineers managed to pull another 14 horsepower from the engine and designers slapped on a slightly adjusted grille, but otherwise the vehicle has stuck pretty close to its 2009 recipe.       Honda seems to have lost its mojo in the past couple of years.

      The latest CR-V is an ugly design. Let's hope it doesn't get worse.

      Here's my wishlist:

      Styling: make it more masculine (hunkered-down, flared wheel arches, 18-inch wheels, rear roof spoiler, fog lights ... all standard)

      Engine: use the Civic Si engine and dual exhaust

      Handling: I test drove a '11 EX-L, and over 40 mph on the highway it felt wobbly.
      Calibrate the suspension for typical highway duty (65-80 mph) that inspires confidence.

      Interior: panoramic roof (power sunroof slides over top of rear glass roof) would be nice option. Make Bluetooth phone connectivity standard in all trim models.

        Not sure that would be a good direction. From my unscientific observations, it seems most of the CR-V buyers are women, and they probably don't want masculine overtly and needlessly aggressive styling in a small urban ute. The sales figures for the past ten years will support that.

        As the owner of a Civic Si, I have to say that the engine would be poorly suited to a heavier crossover vehicle, and poorly suited to the automatic transmission most crossover owners would want. They should use the 190-hp 2.4L four from the Accord EX.

      The CR-V was supposed to be boring. The Element was the CR-V for those who didn't want boring. Boxy design before everyone was doing boxes, modular rear seats, rubber floors, rear suicide doors...it was completely different (and completely awesome as a family hauler, by the way).

      But now that the Element is gone (RIP), I'm curious if Honda will try to put some more flair in the CR-V.

      Well, look on the bright side everyone, there's no way they could make it uglier than it already is. Well, maybe if they added that horrid Acura beak, but I dont want to mention that in case someone at Honda is reading this board. I dont want to give them any ideas...

      hopefully the new RDX isn't so fugly and will be a more formidable competitor for the Q5 in the US market where it's actually built.

        I think the CR-V still has the best balance of ride/handling in the small SUV class. Okay, maybe the Tiguan does, but it's pretty hard to find one of those under $30k.

        When I look at Honda's lineup, the CR-V is one of the last products I think needs updating. But you can't keep something as odd-looking as that around for a while without it starting to look stale. 'Sup, Beetle, PT Cruiser, Element....

        Love it or hate it, the CR-V was the best selling SUV in the U.S. for 2010. Component build quality matched with middle of the road design sells.

        The CR-V has been the best selling SUV in America since 2007, not just for 2010.

        Like you said, "Component build quality matched with middle of the road design sells". The CR-V isn't the best at any one thing, but it is perfectly competent at nearly everything. That is why it sells, coupled with insane resale value and bulletproof reliability.

        Honda should have used the 3.0 V6 with cylinder shutoff, say for the '08 model year, or earlier.

      The current CRV replaced an earlier version that was slightly larger, much lighter, better looking and much cheaper. The fact that the current version could outsell the elderly Escape is no surprise. In light of Honda's current design approach be prepared for a CRV that is heavier, slightly larger this time and more expensive.

      Uglier? Don't know, I think that they have plateaued on ugly with the current design staff. To get any uglier they'll have to bring in ugly specialists. I expect that Chrysler or Renault will be called on to help in this matter.

        You are wrong on every single count, guy.

        2006 CR-V (Second generation):
        LX MSRP: $20,395
        LX Weight: 3,318
        LX Length: 181"
        LX Cargo Volume (seats down): 72 cu. in.

        2007 CR-V (Third generation):
        LX MSRP: $20,600
        LX Weight: 3,389
        LX Length: 177.9"
        LX Cargo Volume (seats down): 72.9 cu. in.

        So the third generation CR-V gained 71 pounds but is also safer, and has more standard equipment, and gets better gas mileage than the CR-V it replaced.

        Yes, it does cost a bit more at ~$300 but it was a brand new model and year to year price adjustments still don't put this out of line. You saying that it is much more expensive is pretty silly, really.

        Looks are subjective, but also keep in mind that the CR-Vs underbite helps it gain ones of the best pedestrian crash test ratings out of ALL CUVs. Honda has ALWAYS been function over form.

        Stating facts really helps, opinion, bias, and exaggeration really doesn't help you out here. You just sound like you have no idea of what you are talking about.
