Ugh, fine. We're sorry. Okay, so that's not exactly how the BBC responded to Mexico's Ambassador Eduardo Medina-Mora Icaza, but it certainly didn't fall all over itself in making a formal apology, either.

In case you need a refresher, Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond quipped on a recent broadcast episode of the hit television series, in reference to the Mexican-built Mastretta MXT sports car, "Mexican cars are just going to be a lazy, feckless, flatulent, oaf with a mustache leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

Not surprisingly, a number of the country's inhabitants were not amused... including the aforementioned Mexican Ambassador, who sent a letter to the BBC as something of a formal complaint. The BBC responded with a letter in return, which included the following statement:

Our own comedians make jokes about the British being terrible cooks and terrible romantics, and we in turn make jokes about the Italians being disorganized and over dramatic; the French being arrogant and the Germans being over organized. We are sorry if we have offended some people, but jokes centered on national stereotyping are a part of 'Top Gear's' humor.
In any case, an apology was demanded and an apology (of sorts) was provided. Now, if you'll excuse us, we lazy, over-fed and easily amused Americans are moving on. Hat tip to Jesse!

Top Gear is the best show on television. Period. If you have never seen it, take the time - even if you're not a "car person' you will enjoy it. I'm so glad the hosts feel free to engage in "questionable" humor based upon ethnicity. Its refreshing to see for us in a Nation where we once had a thing called the First Amendment that protected freedom of speech. Today, similar expression would have the speaker crucified upon the cross of political correctness. We have been muzzled; and can longer speak our minds without fear of losing our jobs or finding the Rev. Jesse Jackson and a news crew waiting for us on our lawns. You go guys...remind us of the freedoms we once had.

Mexico is quickly catching up with Isreal as a sacred cow of criticism...I say screw Mexico.

About time someone checked these old, unfunny geezers for there sterotypes. The show is suppose to be about cars, they lucky them MS13s don't run up on them.
@ Hyperman - and if you knew any better, MS13 is an EL SALVADORAN gang. u just lumped them as the same as Mexicans. not only are they two different countries/nationalities, you just had to pick the one that a lot of Mexicans would actually get offended to be called, and vice versa.

That's where you've got it wrong. the show is no longer and for a while hasn't been about cars. It's a tv talk show with interviews and tv personalities dependent on humor and drama. It merely uses cars as guest on the show. If you don't like it don't watch it, there will always be those of us that do like it and watch it and as long as they have an audience they won't stop.

It wouldn't be so bad if they made fun of EVERYBODY... oh wait...
I'm Latino and I busted out laughing when he said that. And its not like immigration were they only pick on Mexicans and latinos at least top gear does it to every one. Mexico clam down its just a joke geez.
sub humanization is my problem with their comment not the "refried sick comment" our the "blanket with one hole as a jacket comment". when jeremy said "Can you imagine having to wake up every morning, and remembering your a Mexican" that upset me because as we all know racial comments have been used as reasons for putting down people.
if they did it to Latinos or one racial group maybe i would be offended but they do it to everybody and themselves as well, its all just a front from the mexican goverment. they're just being honest about how they feel about the car at first impressions and then they get it in and either they are blown away or feel worst about it. everybody has a different opinion, i say who cares its tv. but i'm glad you feel that way, it just means you care and i'm not saying i dont. its good tv.

But if it was just joke and meant as humor then shouldn't it have been funny?
Ugh seriously. I knew someone one was going to get butt hurt over this. Im Mexican but even I laughed over this. Its a joke common and its not like they've [Top Gear] has only made fun of mexicans. Would they have not been offended if they said something like oh a mexican supercar Im sure it has a lot of trunk space to fit all the drugs they have to smuggle over the border....It has to be fast to avoid they border patrol too....just a joke common now.

What is the fuss about? What they said was all true......
      It's a joke, I say, a joke, son.

      Much like British cuisine.
        "Much like British cuisine."

Educated Americans I know who have travelled extensively in the UK all adore real English cuisine. Uneducated Americans tend to think of fish and chips in newspaper - even though it hasn't been served in newspapers since the early 80's.

Top Gear always make that kind of jokes.....
it reduced recently....but it is pretty harsh sometimes.
Can they even build a car?(one car)

Note the rotten teeth on the guy on the right. He puts his fingers in his mouth and picks at his teeth constantly on the show. The guy in the middle usually looks like he combs his hair with a fan.Thats the dopiest mophead Ive ever seen on TV.These guys would get torn to shreds if they were on an American network, they have no room to insult anyone.
Educated Americans wouldn't travel extensively in the UK. Educated Americans stay where rights and personal freedoms still mean something, at least a little.

I watch and enjoy the UK top gear, and I get their humor. However this time it did seem different than their normal hating on everyone that breathes, IMHO, this time it was too far.

That's just my opinion though, and yes I'm an over fed american, that rides around in a car with an ox cart suspension setup on it.
Why'd they apologize? It's true. HA!
Exhibit A above demonstrates why people are bothered that top gear went too far.
Exhibit B is exactly why jokes about Mexican's are funny.
