Rumors surrounding the notion of a hybrid Ford GT successor are getting thicker by the moment. Auto Express has taken to stoking those fires with a report that says that the next-generation car will boast a supercharged V8 engine along with an electric motor. Drivers will supposedly be able to command an extra boost from the batteries with a push of a button, should they so desire.

Interestingly enough, Auto Express is under the impression that while the forced-induction V8 will be left to put power to the rear wheels, the front tires will be spun by the electric motor only.

That would mean, in effect, that the next GT would be an all-wheel-drive beast – something that would work against the grain of the vehicle's legacy. If the report is to be believed, total power will sit north of 600 ponies, giving the GT successor the teeth it needs to tango with the likes of the McLaren MP4-12C, Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari 458 Italia.

The only problem with this line of thought is that by the time the rumored GT arrives, those cars will all be anywhere from two to three years old. Our guess is that it'd be worth taking AE's insights with a supercharged grain of salt.

      Part of me loves this idea, but then another part says don't mess with my Ford GT!

      Overall though, in the times we live, it's probably a good idea and better than making something like the Mustang a hybrid. Now that would really suck.

      Damn. Thats cool. But I hope there is a classic engine for that great American muscle of a heart they used. (A v10 would be nice, but a v8 would be fine too)

      I wonder whether does 'average' supersport customer want to command the power using a button in addition to a pedal? Also does customer want to fill the tank AND charge the batteries?

        i somehow doubt that the balance of performance sheet allows supercharged 6.2 L engines in this class, just saying...

      They need to quit messing around... 750-800 HP Twin Screw motor with 200-250 HP worth of electric motor up front.

      How dare Ford bring back the GT as a hybrid... it might turn out like the Porsche 918 Hybrid, and that things both ugly and slow!

      To all the sky-is-falling types out there, get a grip... Ford (as well as Porsche, Audi and even Ferrari) wouldn't be looking at introducing Hybrid/EV sportscars if they didn't know that they could be great performers.

        Its called sarcasm.

        My post was meant to make fun of the closed-minded people in here that automatically relate "hybrid" or "EV" as something slow and ugly.

        I am actually ALL FOR Ford coming out with a Hybrid GT because I fully believe they wouldn't consider it if they didn't know they could make it handle and perform incredibly well. Then the icing on the cake of a Hybrid or EV GT would be that the rich folks that can afford those cars would then be paying for the R&D for technology that would eventually be put into "regular" cars that the average person can afford.

      Start/stop, variable displacement are all great, hybrids not so much. The idea of adding weight to make the car more efficient has never struck me as such a great idea. I'd much rather Ford spend what would be their hybrid budget on using composites to make the GT lighter and more aerodynamic.

        They may not use batteries at all. Batteries store a lot of energy, but do it slowly. They are not so great at absorbing large amounts of power. This isn't a good thing for a sports / race car under hard braking and accelleration. They may use a flywheel like the Porsche hybrid or formula KERS system, or they may even use capacitors. Flywheels and capacitors store less total energy, but have a much higher power to weight ratio than batteries. These still add a lot of weight, but this is offset somewhat by a potentially lighter engine and that although it enjoys the benefit of AWD, it has no transfer box or driveshaft going to the front of the car. Also, since the front wheels would have driveaxles, they may even use inboard brakes, but I doubt it.

        Agreed. Hybrids ARE okay, but in mainstream cars: sedans, vans, SUV/CUVs and wagons, but a TRUE supercar like the GT deserves lightweight, raw power. Variable displacement, direct injection, etc. don't add much weight and improve efficiency.

        In case someone from Ford is listening, forced induction 5.0 PLEASE?!?!

        From an enthusiast's point of view, I agree. From a realistic one, I disagree.

        There's no debating the fact that a hybrid vehicle will get better fuel economy than its (likely) lighter conventional counterpart.

        Does that mean I want an overweight hybrid? Not really. Give me a few less MPG and a Lotus style car (low weight, low power, /very/ maneuverable) and I'm going to be happy.

      Push button boost, sounds like nitrous without the engine strain. If it's as smooth as the Fusion Hybrid's transition and capable of handling all that power this sounds like a win-win.

      The Ford GT was a great car but i really hope that whatever the next iteration is, they add in a little more modern and a little less retro. The last Ford GT was far too close to the original (but the retro interior was great)

        I don't know; this is one of those shapes that transcend styling trends. It may be close to the original, but if the original never existed, this car would be heralded as modern and exactly what a supercar should be. So, maybe they'd chose to depart from the previous iteration (maybe like the GT90 concept) and let it evolve, but you can't really say that the current design is overly retro.
