Want some data sharing with your car sharing? On Thursday, Zipcar added eight Toyota Prius plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) to its car-sharing fleet. The plug-in Priuses, which are not available for purchase until 2012, will be accessible to Zipcar members in Boston, MA, Cambridge, MA, San Francisco, CA, and Portland, OR. Zipcar's newest additions are part of a broad pilot program aimed at assisting Toyota in obtaining real-world data prior to the plug-ins' 2012 launch. On the flip side, Zipcar hopes to analyze the use of plug-in hybrids and assess the potential for a broader fleet rollout.

Back in 2009, Zipcar teamed up with the city of San Francisco to test a plug-in Prius. That car, which utilized a plug-in conversion kit provided by A123 Systems, offered up to 40 miles of pure electric range. The battery-only range of Toyota's plug-in Prius is limited to 13 miles, but Scott Griffith, Zipcar's chief executive officer, points out that "approximately one-third of our reservations are made for trips equaling less than 13 miles," which implies that those jaunts could be made in a Prius PHEV without using a drop of gas, as long as there's enough time to rechage between rentals.

Like all of the other hybrids in Zipcar's fleet, the plug-in Prius can only be reserved by the hour, with sixty minutes of seat time costing approximately $7.00.

Zipcar Announces Program with Toyota to Launch Multi-City Introduction of Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHVs)

New Program Designed to Further Test and Evaluate How PHVs and EVs Can Lead to Sustainable Networked Transportation Systems


CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Zipcar, Inc., the world's leading car sharing service, today announced the introduction of eight Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHVs) into the Zipcar network, in an effort to further test and evaluate plug-in hybrid technology and gain increased intelligence on how electric vehicles (EVs) can fit into a large-scale car-sharing model. The Prius PHVs are now available to Zipcar members in Boston/Cambridge, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

The new vehicles are part of a pilot program with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. to demonstrate plug-in hybrid technology, evaluate the performance of the vehicles and help to educate and prepare the public for the electrification of the automobile. The Toyota Prius PHVs, which will become commercially available in 2012, are eight of approximately 160 being distributed by Toyota nationwide.

Zipcar currently offers three of the vehicles in Cambridge/Boston; one located at the Albany Street Garage on the campus of MIT, one at 33 Arch Street in downtown Boston and one at the Prudential Center. San Francisco members have access to three of the Prius PHV vehicles, which join a converted plug-in Prius already in the fleet. One of the vehicles is housed in front of City Hall, one is located in North Point/Fisherman's Wharf and the third is located in Union Square. Two vehicles are also available in Portland, one at the Portland State University Parking Garage and one at Shaver Green. The eight Prius PHVs will be available to Zipcar members in Boston/Cambridge, San Francisco and Portland for reservation throughout 2011.

The Prius PHV is powered by lithium-ion batteries and can be charged from a standard 110-volt outlet. The vehicle, which takes up to three hours to charge, can travel on electric-only power at speeds of up to 62 mph for approximately 13 miles, after which it shifts to operate as a conventional Prius hybrid, averaging an estimated 50 miles per gallon. This makes the PHV model ideal for car sharing, as members are assured that the car can go the distance, no matter the charge when they pick it up. Because many trips taken by Zipcar members are fewer than 13 miles, many PHV trips will be emission-free. With the Prius PHV, Zipcar members can rely on the electric charge for shorter trips, but rest assured they have back-up for longer road trips or for use between charges.

      So that means I will see more of them on my commute to and from work, lets see how long the battery lasts before the motor kicks in with the cold front we've been having.

        The motor kicks in at 62mph (on level ground, lower on inclines) in the Prius PHEV, regardless of battery state.

        It's not an EREV like the Volt. It has an effective all-electric range of 0, unless you restrict yourself to city car use, in which it's 13 miles or so.

      Something tells me Toyota plug-in Prius will be more successful than the Volt simply because people trust the technology. On the other hand, it wont generate nearly the publicity that the Volt has. Time will tell, though.

      Yet another ZipCar I have no interest in driving. I swear it's like they have a list of cars I don't want to drive and only offer cars on that list.

        @Erik: if you own a car, Zipcar is not for you. You need an F150, go to Hertz.

        Zipcar is a service for those who want to get rid of their car.

        I hope you do not work in a position that requires you to make product line decisions for a company.

        While you say "we don't want you as a customer, go to a compeditor," a smart business manager might say "I see an opportunity to greatly expand our current demographic simply by incorporating a few new models into the mix"

        Just think about it. Just about everyone I know has use for a full size pickup at least once a year, yet very few of them own one. These are all potential customers.

        Why on earth would Zipcar want to limit their customer base to the carless?

        Well, I honestly do not enjoy driving any car with an automatic unless it's on a track. I understand and accept why they do not offer manuals, but since they do not, I would not use their cars for the "fun to drive" factor. I would definitely use it for utility. To do something my own car cannot. I would probably join if they offered a Ram or F-150 locally for when I need to haul or tow stuff. Or a minivan or Suburban for when I need to haul people. A 3 series is nice, but with an auto it is no fun for me and it can't do anything my own car can't do. I think if they or a compeditor offered real trucks, suvs and vans, the people who need one occasionally could buy something more practical and efficient for their daily use.

        What sort of cars would they offer your lordship in order for you to get behind the wheel? You do know they have the 3 Series, right? They have Minis, too. those are very fun to drive. Yes, they're automatic, but it's not really that hard to figure out WHY they don't offer any car with a manual. Honestly, what do you expect them to offer? They select cars that are inexpensive to run and reliable because thousands of random people use them every day for commuting or hauling things you can't take on the trains. I rent the same Honda Insight every Thursday for three hours, and while I would rather drive ANY OTHER CAR they offer, I take this one because I don't feel like paying twice as much to drive a 3 series or Mini at city speeds for a total of 30 minutes each way.

      If Toyota wants to sell any of these they probably ought to up the range. A 13 mile all-electric range is vestigial compared to the Volt or the Leaf. Also, it may be worth mentioning that the competition uses lithium ion batteries and the Prius PHEV still uses nickle hydride.

      Toyota is probably helping them out, but if they want to rent electric cars they should probably use one that doesn't require an aftermarket kit just to increase its all-electric range to that of its competitors.

      Still can't figure out how changing from one energy source to another is going to help anything, if and hopefully never that cars go battery/electric we are only moving to another form of energy that will increase there price exponentially when they have you hooked, sort of the same angle the natural gas industry is doing currently, tell you its plentiful and cheap and that is only until they convert you. Electric will not help the environment anymore than gas, we will just have to build more power plants to pollute the water and air because they to need an energy source, to keep up with demand and factories that use more power to build batteries. Load of government crap, unplug.
